Wonder Girl #3

DC Comics 2021

Written by Joëlle Jones

Illustrated by Joëlle Jones & Adriana Melo

Coloured by Jordie Bellaire

Lettered by Clayton Cowles

Let the training commence! Now crowned Hera’s champion, Yara needs to start acting like one. Enter Eros, the goddess’s favorite grandson and the god of love. Can Yara resist his charms long enough to master her unpredictable new powers? All the gods are watching…are you?

I wouldn’t say I had a negative reaction to the idea of a new Wonder Girl but I did question the decision but seeing Cassie playing a role in this and the more we learn about Yara the more enamoured I become. The fact that so many folks know who Yara is and what she represents and yet Yara knows so little about herself has proven to be such a dynamic factor to the storytelling. Also that these factions either want to kill her or help her remains as much a mystery to us as it is to her and Yara hasn’t even met them or knows that they are hot on her trail, well they would be if they weren’t fighting one another. I mean every Amazonian location has agents out for Yara and that they do and we know so little about that it definitely instills this desire to know more and that is presented beautifully.

I am such a huge fan of the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter continues to further flesh out their personalities. The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story the more we want to know.

How we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen is magnificently rendered. Nothing about it is rushed or glossed over. It all happens with this natural grace and beauty to it that is amazing to see. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is impeccably achieved. Also the depth, dimension and complexity that we see in how this story is presented is both bold and delicate that it creates this whole bewildering effect on the reader.

The interiors here are absolutely stunningly gorgeous. The linework is exquisite and how the varying weights and techniques are being utilised to create this level & quality of detail in the work that we see is astounding. The creativity and imagination on display here is mindbogglingly brilliant and if there’s any question or doubt then the swamps guardians are all you need to see to know what I say is true. The way backgrounds are being utilised to enhance and expand the moments as well as work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show such a magnificent eye for storytelling. The colour work is brilliantly rendered. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is rendered exceptionally well. It shows the eye of someone who knows how colour works and how to maximise their effects to their fullest.

This series breaks all the rules that we know about when it comes to the Amazons and their champions. This is new, fresh, interesting and exciting and the way this is presented from every facet contains this majesty and grace that belies what is happening to her. With some absolutely brilliant writing and strong characterisation alongside these simply breathtaking interiors make this Wonder Girl as unique as it gets.
