As Lam and the Angels continue the mission that her father started, Gus tells the story of a man who lost everything, and the one person who deemed him worth saving.

Alright I’m totally digging this book right now. Lam is a breath of fresh air as she curses like a sailor and is sarcastic as they come. She doesn’t believe in what her father did nor these Angels, whose weapons are made of a metal that only comes to earth in meteorites. So yeah she doesn’t really fit in but then I’m not entirely sure she knows herself well enough to fit in anywhere at this time in her life. I like that we get to know enough about her this quickly so that we feel a kinship with her, we can relate to her and feel empathy for her. More so if you’ve ever lost a parent or just feel different and considered an outsider. This of course describes many of us in one way or another and that we’re so engaged in this story at this stage is among the reasons why he’s considered one of today’s best writers.

I’m very much enjoying the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceedingly well. The character development that we see through the narration, the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does a magnificent job bringing us their personalities. The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story the more engaged and invested we become in these events.

I have to say that I’m very much enjoying how we see this being structured as well as how we see the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen. I also like how we see the layers open up new avenues to be explored as they add this wonderful depth, dimension and complexity to the story. The backstory opens up the idea of how long this has been going on and it’s something I’d love to see explored more. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward are impeccably achieved.

I’m digging the interiors here. I love that we see the pencils and inks being so in sync that it feels like it’s one person doing all the work. The linework is phenomenal and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create the detail within the work is extraordinary to see. How we see backgrounds being utilised and how they enhance and expand the moments are marvellously handled. How they work within the composition of the panels brings out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows a remarkable eye for storytelling. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows a stellar understanding of how colour works and how to maximise their effects. From light sources to how that light changes colours on clothes and such to the glow of the Halo weapons we see such great work.

I like the mythology that’s being created here and seeing how far back it goes, at least as far back as people know, for it could go back further. By establishing this timeline and that there have been those fighting them adds this sense of comfort, for lack of a better word, or at least establishes a history. This has some sensational writing and amazing characterisation that’s wrapped up in these super solid interiors bringing us a new potentially epic story.
