SDCC Recap

Saturday

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished 11 months ago 3 min read

For us day 2 was Saturday and though it was slightly less busy then Friday we were still kind of running around a lot. We ended Saturday at about 13,000 steps and my hips were killing me by the end of the day. We not only got a lot of panels and things done, but I got to do some networking and we finally made our way to the exhibit floor.

Saturday we woke up bright and early, 7am so that we would be in line in time to get a good seat for Felicia Day’s panel. I was among the first in line so I sat third row center to see her beautiful face. I just have to say most of the panels at SDCC try to be very professional as they are talking about professional things. But Felicia Day is so open and personable, it felt like hanging out with a friend. Before her panel she came out to greet fans and hand out pins and after her panel she snuck away from her handler and was taking selfies with fans, as they tried to call her back multiple times she kept saying “just a few more”. She truly dedicated so much of herself to her fans and that’s one of the many reasons we adore her. She promoted the only thing she could, her new audio drama Third Eye. And she talked about the strokes and what the WGA and SAG are fighting for. She is truly a beautiful person and being able to be that close to her, hear her talk about what she’s passionate about and ask her a question was the highlight of my weekend.

I then stopped by Rachel Smythe’s fireside chat where fans celebrated her latest Eisner award for Lore Olympus that she won Friday night. She talked about her creative process and what it was like to dive into Greek Mythology. How she improved her drawing skills and how the popularity of her little webcomic surprised her. Also just a reminder that the 5th volume of Lore Olympus comes out in October so be ready for some more beautifully drawn mythological romance.

The end part of the day was me doing work. San Diego Comic Con is actually very industry oriented. Lots of panels on how to break in, sustain a career and network. I was lucky enough to go to the creators connection workshop where aspiring artists and writers got to connect and hear from established comic book creators as well as each other. I got to connect with lots of amazing, creative and talented people and I can’t wait to collaborate with some of them. The last thing of the day at the convention center was a how to properly pitch and promote yourself panel, and though the person that ran it said that he wasn’t going to tell us anything that we didn’t already know, I learned quite a lot and was also able to network with some of the other people that went to the panel.

To end our night we attempted to go to an afterparty but the line was so long to get in, we decided to just go get dinner and retreat to the hotel. The day was packed and I felt super productive. I really hope I get to use some of these new connections and get some actual creative content out for you guys. I have some comic book stuff in the works and I can’t wait for people to finally see what's been knocking around in my head.
