The root of all the issues was that the Duchess of Cornwall was not a pure maiden and Lady Di was.

Charles and Camilla

Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, and his wife Camilla Shand-Parker Bowles seem to have found their happy ending but it was a long and bumpy road. A lot of the drama that got them here could have been avoided if they were allowed to marry when they first fell in love. There are several different stories on what interfered but when you put them all together, along with other facts it comes down to one thing. It was believed that Diana Spencer was a virgin and known that Camilla was not. Charles and Camilla allegedly met for the first time at a polo match at Windsor Great Park, in 1970. They begin dating, but Charles left to serve in the Royal Navy for eight months.

When he returns, Camilla is engaged to Andrew Parker Bowles, whom she married in 1973. It's not known why Camilla did not wait for her prince or the reason Charles did not ask her to save her love for him. Some reports state that Charles told her he would not settle down and marry until he was 30, so perhaps she did not want to wait that long. What is known is that Andrew and Camilla had dated off and on since the 1960s which is the issue. It was said that the Queen thought Camilla not suitable and hand picked Diana, who was the granddaughter of one of her friends.

News reports in 1980 claimed that a doctor checked Diana to confirm that her virginity was intact, but there is no way to know if this is accurate. One of her uncles assured everyone that the shy 19 year old had never known a man, but how would he know for certain? Camilla and Andrew Parker Bowles had two sons, with Prince Charles as the godfather to one of them. Charles, needing a bride to provide him an heir agreed to marry Diana. The rumor mill says that he proposed in Camilla's garden and that Mrs. Parker Bowles gave her blessing on the union.

This is when things begin to go south. Initially, news reports said that Camilla was a confidante to Charles when she began popping up after the wedding, in July 1981. Charles said in a subsequent interview that he began an affair with Mrs Parker Bowles in 1986. In a later interview shortly before their divorce, Diana said that the marriage was a bit crowded because there were three of them in it. The princess realized that she was chosen to produce an heir and a spare, which she did and that it was Camilla whom Charles really loved.

It sounds like Charles and Camilla never really stopped loving each other even though both were married. What is interesting about all of it is that Andrew Parker Bowles is said to have given his blessing to the affair. Another interesting fact is that Camilla is said to have teased Charles early on about the fact that her great great grandmother was the mistress of his great grandfather. This may explain why the Duchess was OK with being a paramour all those years while Diana was destined to be the queen.

In 1994 Charles described Camilla as a great friend for many years who would continue to be a friend and in 1995 the Parker Bowles marriage ends in divorce. Charles and Diana divorced in 1996 and in 1997 shortly after the Prince gives Camilla a 50th birthday party, Diana dies tragically in a car accident. Two divorces, two little boys without a mother, worldwide scandal and shame, but it did not have to be. In February of 2005, Charles and Camilla marry with the blessing of the Queen. All the rules and reasons that kept them apart, Diana's tortured soul and untimely death seem moot points now. The man who would be king is married to his true love after all 50 years from the time they first met. It could have been done decades ago and saved a lot of pain and heartache but that's life. All of this drama because of the V word.
