What would you do if you met a celebrity You-tuber? A fun and perhaps insightful poll.

While the above poll is intended for fun, it is also a slight pulse check on our perception of reality, those who tell what it is, and our response to that reality and the new celebrity type it give us.

The rise of the online celebrity is fairly recent compared to other celebrity forms. And by online we do not mean the various streaming services available in which we find the classic forms of celebrity, by online we mean the ever growing platforms like Youtube and Tik tok, Snapchat, Instagram and the like.

We are used to the classic "The Singer", "The Movie Star", "The TV Star", "The Athlete", "The News Anchor", "The Author", "The Painter", "The Musician" etc. forms of celebrity. But with the rise of these platforms, a newer, different type of celebrity has been found that can be achieved by almost anyone! Does this new type of celebrity make the title more realistic, down-to-earth, in-touch with the everyday world as that is where they come from? Or does this new type of celebrity create a new false sense of reality? A Hyper-reality so to speak where the average and everyday and can only be experienced and validated online.

The latter idea tends to give one pause. At least, it should.

The Poll asks this question:

If you met a celebrity You-tuber would you -

1) Fanboy / Fangirl and ask for a selfie? 2) Play it cool? 3)High Five? 4) Ask to be featured in their next video? 5) Ignore them?

Number one tends to be the typical response when sighting one of the classic celebrity types, especially film, tv, and music stars. But due to the casual accessibility of these seemingly average people who have risen to a new type of fame via these online platforms, other reactions or responses tend to be more the norm. Reactions like number three, number four, or number five.

These reactions tend to be more casual, which is fine. Some however, begin to borderline on rudeness or even aggression. These platforms, since they hyper-realize reality, can hyper-realize our reactions. While it seems with a word like hyper-realize, that the reactions would be extreme, what we actually get is a type of contradictary term, at least at first glance. The reaction is extreme in its casualness, taking casual interaction to unatural extremes, so much so to the point of rudeness, aggression, and sometimes of the part of the fan, entitlement.

Watch a Tik Tok Fan go around meeting famous Tik Tokers at a fan convention called Vidcon:

All this being said, ask yourself what it is you think about celebrity life and culture, particularly in these new platforms. Are these new expressions challenging the celebrity status quo? Are they breaking down scared traditions of classic celebrity? Do classic celebrity types need to rise to challenge as some are already doing by joining these newer platforms? Do fans need to cool down or tone up their reactions and responses to the new celebs? Is the answer some holistic combitation of everything? Or is the answer... who cares?
