The casting of 'Nightmare Alley' is one of the best features.

Let’s see what exciting activities we see at the circus today.

Nightmare Alley appeared in theaters in 2021. A mysterious man wanders into the circus. Discovering the features of this thrilling life, he lets the fame go to his head, finding joy in manipulating others for their money.

Over the last year, I have become fond of Guillermo del Toro's work. As soon as I heard about Nightmare Alley, I was excited to see what the story entailed. Well-acted and layered with stunning edits and cinematography, Nightmare Alley could have had a stronger second act.

Bradley Cooper’s impeccable charm is a notable highlight in Nightmare Alley. His character is the best example that you can’t trust everyone you meet. Cooper did an outstanding job with his character, most notably in the climax.

Nightmare Alley is filled with recognizable actors. Cate Blanchett steals the show in an epic showdown with Cooper. Dr. Lilith Ritter is not your average psychologist. She sees right through you with her icy stare. Blanchett and Cooper worked incredibly together.

Toni Collette gives another commendable performance. I am impressed with the range that Collette conquers in each role. Other credits include Rooney Mara, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Rob Perlman, Mary Steenburgen, and David Strathairn.

The casting of Nightmare Alley is one of the best features. However, that does not compare to the story. Starting with a strong beginning with a circus setting, the film had to transition into a completely different tale. It felt like a different film. I enjoyed the first half more than the last act.

The story felt like it should have concluded after the first act. Most issues were resolved and there was already a constructive story. And the second half ignores the ensemble from the first half, focusing only on Cooper and Blanchett. A few of the characters are brought back unnecessary for one scene.

It loses its sense of logic. This is where del Toro didn’t acquire his best direction for the ensemble of the cast. Nightmare Alley is supposed to be an ensemble film. Most character actions didn't feel right. That layer of the film is intentional. In a way, the story and characters play with your mind.

Aside from the flaws in the story, the cinematography and editing is a component that will capture audiences. Sets are colorful. It feels like you are in the time period. The circus had the best design. Now, I would love to attend a circus after seeing all the shows put on. Some aspects of the film reminded me of The Greatest Showman, however.

I loved the scene transitions, how they’d fade into the next scene. Nightmare Alley is masterfully edited to resemble a film noir. The camera followed characters closely, but most importantly, it viewed every reaction. As the message entails, you can’t trust everyone.

Guillermo del Toro has a gifted (and dark) imagination. The wheels are always turning in his head, creating uniquely dark tales. Nightmare Alley is a contrast from the genre of films he normally brings to the screen. His direction to the cast was dictated well. However, story elements, preferably the second act could have been better. I wanted the film to take place in the carnival the entire time.

The circus setting already had several creative liberties. I felt the excitement from the circus sequences. The second act was slow and it felt out of place. It’s still an incredibly well-directed film that you should see. The film kept my attention.

Fans of Guillermo del Toro will enjoy Nightmare Alley. It’s a film that’s worth your watch.
