My Review "RuPaul's Drag Race: Season Three"

"Who the f*** is Heather?"

As a die hard fan of RuPaul's Drag Race for many, many years, I have watched every season and every episode. With being a religious viewer of RPDR, you would think I'd have reviewed all of the seasons but I haven't yet! I thought while being in a global pandemic, it was the right time to do so.

If you are not familiar with RuPaul's Drag Race, it is an American reality show and competition to seek out America's next drag superstar and entertainer. The contestants compete in challenges that include singing, dancing, outfit creating, comedy and celebrity impersonations and many more to win a cash prize (in this season $75,000) as well as collaborations and tours with different brands and companies to help get their name out to the world as an entertainer. The judges critique the queens based on their runway presentation and how well they excelled in that week's challenge. The bottom two queens that least excelled in that week's challenge then have to lip sync to a song to fight to stay in the competition.

In this season, there are 12 queens competing for the crown and instantly, there were was a wide range of drag styles: fashion queens, camp and comedy queens, personality (and maybe not so much look) queens and pageant queens. There was a little bit of entrance room drama. Two queens India Ferrah and Phoenix entered the workroom with the same look (I mean literally the same look) and that was a funny, but also an awkward moment. Another moment of drama was when returning queen Shangela popped out of a Christmas box revealing that she is competing in the competition once again. Apart from Shangela, I was particularly drawn to Yara Sofia because of her fiery personality, Raja because of her fashion forward choices and her "screw it" attitude, Manila Luzon because of her camp and fashion blend and Filipino pride and Stacey Lane Matthews because of her personality and country charm.

In this season, along with the differences in fashion styles, there's also quite a vast difference with all of the different personalities, which brings in drama and conflict. There are some queens that have not created the best reputation with me. For example, Mimi Imfurst is very confident in her fashion and acting skills when they don't translate as strongly in real life and when she gets critiques she doesn't agree with, she makes it known, which rubs me the wrong way. There is a clique created with Manila Luzon, Delta Work, Raja and Carmen Carrera called "The Heathers" based on the movie Heathers and they call every other queen a Booger because they are not are on their level. I particularly don't like this clique because they come off as arrogant even though they have the talent to back it up but they look down at others which I don't like.

Throughout this season, I'd say there's a good mixture of challenges like creating an advertisement supporting the troops, acting in a sci-fi short film, Snatch Game (a parody of the TV show Match Game) and many more. In comparison to the previous seasons, there are way more design and concept challenges. If you look back and watch this season, you'd think some of the fashion choices and challenges are somewhat dated but up to date for it's time.

What I really appreciate about this series is the introduction to the new lingo, fashion, art and pop culture to the world. Looking at the overall transformation from male to female is really quite astonishing. You can really appreciate the hard work and craftsmanship that goes into it all. Watching this series definitely opens your mind up to the whole drag world and culture. In total, I'd say this is a great second season that is jammed packed with different elements. With all of the variety of challenges that are presented, I'm certain you'll be entertained. If you like the drama, I'd say check out this season! Beware of the claws though, because they're out!
