My Review of "The Lego Movie: The Second Part"

If you liked the first Lego movie you might enjoy this movie. Although some adults may find some of it kind of repetitive.

The Lego Movie: The Second Part is a sequel that I thought studios made just to cash in on the popularity of the first movie. Of course it is but I thought the original Lego movie was going to be a big advertisement as well. As much as the original movie was a big advertisement for Lego it was a surprisingly fun movie.

This sequel is based right after the first Lego movie. Finn's little sister Bianca is now allowed to play with in the Lego world and this forever changes everything.

Emmet is still the main character in the sequel. It seems that everything around him has changed except for him. He's told by his love interest Wyldstyle that he needs to grow up and be more serious. He's trying but it really isn't his nature.

All of a sudden, I guess to get the story going, their Lego world is attacked by a mysterious individual. Ultimately they are all kidnapped except for Emmet because this new villain doesn't believe that Emmet has any significant skills. Immediately I thought to myself that it seems very similar to the first movie.

Of course Emmet goes off to save his friends but on his way he meets a new character named Rex Dangervest. He's pretty much what Emmet wants to become. Rex agrees to help Emmet and the two go on an intergalactic journey to save Emmet's friends.

There's a lot of familiarity to this movie from the first movie. It's almost a retread of the original movie but with new shiny stickers. This is both good and bad. The good side of it is that you know what to expect with the movie. Unfortunately that's the same thing that makes it bad. Most of this movie is heavily predictable but it's a kids movie. Don't be expecting something incredibly new when you watch it.

Still I don't know if you'll like this movie if you liked the first movie. At first I was even hesitant to watch this movie because I knew it would follow the same formula as the first movie. It did and I wasn't surprised. There are a few things that they have fun with.

The movie is very aware of itself and plays around with some of the audience's knowledge of the famous voice actors in the movie. Chris Pratt does the voice of the main character and they make fun of the various roles he has played in real life. They even have some funny cameos of celebrity cameos that kind of play themselves or their famous movie roles.

There are also a lot of parodies of big movies sprinkled throughout this movie. It's kind of got a little of the feeling of those old 2000 parody movies that used to be so popular. A lot of these types of jokes will probably fly over a lot of kid's heads. Some of the jokes were pretty funny.

The aesthetic of the movie is very similar to the first movie. Again it's all very familiar and the wow factor that we got from the first movie isn't there anymore. The first movie felt original and creative because they had such a different style and different approach to CGI animated movies. This wow factor really isn't there anymore.

It was an amalgamation of the fresh original look, feeling, storytelling and unpredictability that made the original movie so great. The sequel felt like the same movie but with different makeup on. It looks slightly different and has a slightly different story but essentially it's the same thing.

Overall, I was still able to enjoy this movie but I didn't feel as enthusiastic throughout this movie as I did with the first movie. Kids will probably think differently. I'm sure that kids will really enjoy this movie. I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. It would be hard for me to re-watch this movie all over again.
