My Review of "The Kids in the Hall (2022)"

The kids are back and they haven't skipped a beat.

The Kids in the Hall have been brought back to make a brand new season. It was recently released exclusively on Amazon Prime. For those that don't know the group. This is a comedy troupe from Canada that made some pretty risqué and forward thinking comedy sketches in the late 80's and early 90s.

This new season is very much on brand with the type of humor they used to produce back in the day. Of course it's been updated to match the climate of today and in some ways makes fun of the times of yesterday. These comedy sketches can get very heady but also very zany at the same time. I loved the diversity of their comedy and it shows that they haven't skipped a beat after all these years.

The first episode will really throw you for a loop. They make fun of the fact that their last outing was a poorly received movie. I actually loved that movie but they made fun of the fact that it kind of prevented them from proceeding to continue on new endeavors together until now.

I was actually really shocked by this first episode because Amazon seemed to have told them that there were no limitations on their comedy. There is some full frontal nudity that I don't think anyone was expecting. This first episode pretty puts the shock factor to the audience to give us a feeling that anything can happen. It puts us on edge to see how far they're really going to go with this short season. I thought it was pretty brilliant because there are certain skits later where they play on how far they're going to go with the comedy. So this first episode really set the tone for the rest of the shows.

We also get a few familiar faces that we've seen in the past. They've revived a few recurring characters that we loved from the past and it's fun to see the troupe bring them back. I'm sure a lot of die hard fans will really appreciate that they would honor these characters with a new vision.

Still, most of the characters are part of recurring jokes of the specific episode. There are one off skits in-between this main story but each episode has some structure to it. They've put some thought in the composition and the arrangement of each of the episodes so that the viewers will be able to keep up with the recurring jokes.

If you're familiar with the jokes of the show then you'll feel right at home. Those that just jump into it are in for a bit of a culture shock. Jokes can range from gay relationships to a guy trying to beat people at games of squash. It's all over the place. You can feel comfortable with one joke and then really uncomfortable with the next. There's a huge variety here and some of the jokes will eventually hit you. I'm sure someone will find at least one of the skits funny because they're so diversified. It isn't for everyone though.

I loved the show in the past and watching these new episodes reminded me of the talent that this troupe had. It's really weird seeing them still doing this since they look so much older than they did back in the day but I just fell into the environment that they built and the characters that they created.

Overall, it was a really fun time for me but I don't think this is humor that can be appreciated by all. I could be wrong because I think this comedy troupe had a resurgence as of late because people are starting to learn what they did back in the 80s and 90s that was so revolutionary. I have to give this short season a 7 out of 10. I hope they continue to churn out more seasons.
