My Review of "Studio 666"

This is nothing like the Tenacious D movie. Maybe Foo Fighters will like it though?

Studio 666 entered into theatres very quietly in 2022. I was meaning to watch it a while back because I love Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny. This is definitely nothing like that movie. The trailer had the same vibes so that's what peaked my interest.

It all starts with a creepy opening to set the mood for this mysterious rock and roll mansion. We have a group of people brutally murdered in the house by some sort of evil spirit. It's quite violent and creepy but sets the mood for what's to come.

We quickly jump to the band, Foo Fighters, in a meeting room with their manager. All members of the real life band play themselves in the movie. They're all discussing the creation of their 10th album. The lead singer, Dave Grohl, (who is the main character of this movie) wants to do something big for their 10th album but they're in a bit of a writer's block.

This is when their manager suggests the creepy rock and roll mansion in the beginning of the movie. The band reluctantly agrees. Immediately upon arriving to the mansion Dave starts seeing some weird stuff in the mansion but doesn't think much of it.

What lies ahead of them is murder and destruction. A grand over the top horror adventure for them to figure a way out of. There's a few laughs along the way as well.

For the most part this movie is adequate. I think that if you're a fan of the group you'll have even more fun with this movie. There are probably a ton of little things in there that casual viewers will not spot but that's okay. It can still be fun for all.

Seeing as the movie is predominantly cast by a real life rock band don't expect the acting to be incredible. Surprisingly they do have some pretty comedic timing from time to time. You also have a sense that they really do know each other very well and their comradery and friendship really shines in this movie.

Movie wise it isn't a complicated story but we didn't expect it to be. Everything is laid out pretty well and comprehensive. You can tell that this is a lower budget movie but they did the best with what they had. It kind of feels like a passion project that was brewing and was finally actualized with probably not too much intervention.

Like I said before I originally thought this movie would be similar to Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny but it is far from it. They do have some over the top scenes but done in a gore and horror kind of way. At times some of these are pretty comical. They were done specifically in this manner and they're pretty consistent with it.

Being a horror movie they do sprinkle a lot of jump scares in the movie. I kind of wished that they had a little more meaning other than to jump scare the audience. They do a pretty good job in startling you even though you know it's going to happen.

Overall, I was still able to enjoy this movie. Unfortunately I felt like I was a little outside the circle to understand all the little in-jokes that they sprinkled through the movie. This is probably a movie better watched with a group of people possibly inebriated as well. That's why I have to give this movie a 6 out of 10. I hope this doesn't discourage more movies like this. It is okay but I can see how they can improve if they continue to make movies.
