My Review of "MacGruber: Season One"

One hell of a season and probably one of the funniest things I've seen in a while.

MacGruber Season One was a very unexpected series that came out in 2021. I have been a fan of the MacGruber movie for quite some time and I was really excited to hear that the character would live on in TV format. It's a little hard to tell what was going to happen since so much had happened in the movie though.

The season starts off years after the events of the MacGruber movie. It still follows the same MacGruber we knew from the movie. In fact everything in the movie is canon to this TV series. Don't worry if you haven't seen the movie yet because they do explain the events. Though I think you will want to watch the movie when they explain to you how ludicrous it was. I tend to forget how crazy the movie was until they give the background information of MacGruber's whereabouts.

Unfortunately MacGruber went to prison after the events of the movie and rightly so. However, due to these changes he had lost his Vicki and soured his friendship (not really a friendship) with Piper.

Now there's a new terrorist that had kidnapped the daughter of the president. The only person they'd like to exchange her for is MacGruber. After a bit of protest MacGruber finally concedes and agrees to meet with the terrorists.

From there we have the most insane serious of events that had me dying with laughter. Everything he does is so over the top that I wonder what was going on in the head of the writers for this series. For those that don't know MacGruber's humor it's a bit of a culture shock watching it.

MacGruber is kind of a cross between Johnny English and an 80's action hero rolled up in one. He's so incompetent but lucky at the same time. Just when you think he's a washed up loser he goes ape crazy killing villains like spreading warm butter on toast.

A lot of the violent antics are hilarious. One of his most famous killing devices are his hands. He constantly rips people's throats out and makes bad one liners when he does so. This over the top violence can be quite gruesome at points but at the same time insanely funny.

His odd relationship with Vicky is pretty good too. The two of them have a great chemistry together. I guess it's because they're both equally weird and understand each other. Their relationship is strained because Vicky had married General Fasoose while MacGruber was in prison for 11 years. You can tell the two are eventually going to crack get with one another again but it's hilarious seeing the tension between the two.

There are so many memorable quotes within movie but they come at you a mile a minute and it's a lot to take in. Still you have a few of the old MacGruber antics and yes he is naked for a lot of the runtime throughout this season. That's to be expected though and you'll see a lot of middle fingers as well. This is not a TV show for kids.

It's also quite short as well. There are only 8 episodes and they really fly by fast. You can binge watch the whole thing in a weekend. The only problem was that I wanted more so I'm really hoping that they continue to get picked up because I want another season!

Overall, you can probably tell that I loved this season. For those that are fans of the character from Saturday Night Live or the movie you'll feel right at home with this one. I have to give this season a 9 out of 10. It really hit all my laugh buttons and I will definitely be recommending this show to everyone.
