My Review of "Coming 2 America"

This was like an Eddie Murphy version of an Adam Sandler movie.

Coming 2 America is the sequel we never thought would ever come. I think they ended the first movie pretty well that they didn't really need another one but why not? We're doing this with a lot of other movie nowadays. This isn't necessarily a bad thing either though. Fans of the first movie should enjoy this movie but I'm not entirely sure how many people continually watch the original to understand all the references in this movie.

The movie starts off 30 years after the original movie. Akeem has lived a very full family life with 3 daughters. Everything is going well until he realizes that his father the king is about to die. This would make Akeem the next ruler of Zamunda.

Here's where General Izzi from Nextdoria come into play. I still laugh at the name of their country because it sounds like "next door", it's such a lazy name to give them. They've been slighted in the past because in the first movie Akeem refused to marry General Izzi's sister. She's still barking and hopping on one foot from when Akeem asked her to do it 30 years ago.

Now that Akeem has three daughters General Izzi wants Akeem to join the two kingdoms by arranging the marriage of his daughter with Izzi's son. By royal decree none of Akeem's daughters can be deemed the heir to the throne. Akeem needs a male heir to succeed him for the throne.

Then there's a realization that Akeem actually has a bastard son in America. Apparently he was drugged and had unwanted sex with a woman from Queens before he met Lisa. I found it quite weird that they casually played off the fact that Akeem was date raped and no one minded. They even got angry with Akeem for the whole ordeal.

So he opts to travel to New York once again to find his bastard son and make him the heir to the throne rather than marry his daughters off to Izzi's son. This is to show that Akeem is starting to become like his father with his focus on tradition. He has already forgotten that he himself had went to New York 30 years ago to escape his own arrange marriage.

There are a whole bunch of problems if you consider this movie in 2021. For the sake of the movie you'll have to excuse them. This movie is also made for fans of the original movie. If you couldn't stand the first movie then there's a good chance you're not going to be able to handle this one as well.

I for one liked the first movie and I was able to enjoy this movie as well. It wasn't exactly ground breaking or mind blowing but it was fun. You can tell a lot of it was a group of friends getting together again and just having fun together. There's a surprisingly large amount of dance routines and performances.

This was definitely a party for all of them. That's why this film sort of reminded me of Adam Sandler's movies that took place in exotic locales. There's definitely a different formula to this movie but it still falls into certain categories. It's like a romantic comedy with a hint of rags to riches/fish out of water feel to it.

Fans of the original will have fun with it because there's a lot of call backs to the original movie. Those watching this movie for the first time may become quite lost in the shuffle. Due to the fact there are so many call backs and 80's references I'm not sure younger audiences will understand a lot of the jokes. That's why I can see how some reviewers won't quite understand this movie.

Overall, I liked this movie. I don't know if I like it as much as the original but only because it felt more like an expansion pack to the original movie. Sort of like a TV movie sequel which it really is. I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 7. It's not as terrible as everyone is making it out to be. If you want to watch this please get yourself to watch the first movie before hand. This way you'll get more enjoyment out of this movie.
