My Review of "Blockbuster: Season 1"

There's a lot of potential to this show but ultimately it falls a little flat.

Blockbuster Season 1 is a new Netflix exclusive TV series that came out in 2022. It's kind of ironic that Netflix would have a TV series about Blockbuster if you know about the history between the two companies. Many people might be too young to realize this but at one time Blockbuster had a stranglehold on Netflix and refused to buy out Netflix.

The TV show starts off with the introduction of our main protagonist Timmy. He's the owner of a Blockbuster video rental store in a small town. Originally I thought this movie was based in the past but it's supposed to be based in the present time period.

Tim soon realizes that all the Blockbusters have gone out of business and he will soon have the very last Blockbuster in existence. This comes with a few challenges. The parent company used to subsidize a lot of the expenditures that the store had to incur. For example the rent of the building and utilities were partly paid by the parent company. Now Tim has to fend for himself to save the store.

He could easily close up shop and quit the whole business seeing as everyone is going to streaming anyways. Not Tim though, he really believes in his store and loves the staff that he works with. We are introduced to his exuberant staff.

We have Eliza who is Tim's high school crush. She's working there because she's lost her job and is having difficulties with her marriage. Tim and her have a will they or won't they relationship thing going on throughout this season.

I liked the characters Carlos, Hannah and Kayla. Carlos is a potential film maker but needs to build his own self confidence for following his dream. Hannah is a ditsy girl with low expectations. She's kind of like a shining light through all of the bad situations that will happen throughout the season. Kayla seems to hate everything but secretly she actually cares and doesn't like to show it.

I didn't like the character Connie and I think they spent a little too much time with her in this season. She's an older character that seems lonely and disassociated. Her character felt a little too much for me and she got on my nerves a lot in this show. It kind of really brought the show down for me.

For the most part they have a really good cast and they do a pretty good job in keeping this show going. The show really feels like one of those old school sitcom TV shows from the Thank Goodness It's Friday ABC shows. The dialogue and writing is very predictable and quite kitschy.

All the jokes are quite obvious and they don't really hit all the time. Sometimes it's at the fault of the show trying to lean onto the joke a little too much. Sometimes it feels like a Saturday Night Live sketch that doesn't work. They have to play off the same theme because it's part of the script. The actors try their best to salvage the situation but sometimes charisma isn't enough.

Overall, I thought this season was a bit rough. You can tell they wanted to continue on with this series because they ended it off with a cliffhanger. I hope they can fix everything up and make it better. Unfortunately if you're going to ask me what I think about this season I'm not really going to recommend it. It's too bad because there was a lot of potential with this show. I have to give this show a 5 out of 10. I'm not sure if I'll continue on with the second season if they even continue to make one.
