Book Review: "All the Fear of the Fair" ed. by Edward Parnell
Full Title: All the Fear of the Fair: Uncanny Tales of Circus and Sideshow edited by Edward Parnell When I was in university, I did a ton of research into the periodicals regarding freak shows. Basically it was all to do with writing about Victorian carnivals and the way in which nowadays, for some reason, it has become a frightening prospect for some. We have books like Nightmare Alley by William Lindsay Graham that pay testament to that fact. In this British Library Tales of the Weird anthology - we see how time has changed the idea around the freak show and the carnival and of course, how the whole idea of the funfair came about. Belén
Movies are a wonderful form of entertainment, but more importantly they are perhaps the best vehicle for social and political commentary there is because they are so accessible to the masses. This year we have gotten some excellent commentary from films like Sinners and Mickey 17 and now Belén.

Mickey 17
Mickey 17 was on the must watch list for last year but time got away from me. We are once again playing catch up before awards season, I promise I will start doing these in a timely manner this year! This was a film we knew we wanted to see. Robert Pattinson is actually an incredible actor who sometimes still gets caught up in Twilight discourse in an attempt to discredit his skills. That combined with it being a Bong Joon Ho movie made it highly anticipated.

Silver Screen Magic with Greta Garbo
Greta Garbo came into this world in 1905. She was born in Sweden and got her start in acting during the silent era, in Swedish films. Seeing her MGM chief Louis B. Mayer requested the actress to come to Hollywood. Garbo arrived and became a romantic leading lady with a beautiful silver screen presence. Mayer was worried about how she would sound on screen when talkies arrived because English was not her first language. However, in her role in the film “Anna Christie,” Garbo proved she could speak very well and it translated wonderfully on the silver screen. She became known for the line “I want to be alone,” portraying a depressed ballerina in the film “Grand Hotel.” Before anyone knew it Garbo actually retired from the silver screen and became a recluse, leaving wonderful memories behind.
