Fantasia Film Festival 2020: An Interview with Quinn Armstrong, Director of ‘Survival Skills’
Quinn Armstrong’s Survival Skills has proved to be an audience favorite at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival. A parody of police training videos of the 1980s, Armstrong’s film delves deeper into the outmoded teachings of these officers and presents a much more nuanced look into the police training construct as a fresh-faced and naive officer, Jim desperately tries to do the right thing.

First, I need to pick up where I left off... I have to admit...I felt disillusioned with last season. After James and Emma were eliminated in the semi-finals, I didn't even care to finish out the season's blogs. Albeit, that was bias getting in the way of my objective aim in writing those recaps.
Katie JohnsPublished 4 years ago in GeeksDimples To Die For: Reflecting on A.C. Slater, my Childhood Crush
Dear Reader, let me give you some insight on my adolescent self growing up. I spent every waking moment during childhood with my eyes glued onto the TV. I would try to stay up on a school night because Ghost was on. I identified with Sophia Petrillo when I was 8 years old. I had a physical TV Guide and highlighted programs I anticipated watching because this would potentially be the only time I'd be able to watch Dumb and Dumber until it aired on TBS again - We have a connection, you see! The movie released the same year I was born so I have to watch it!

What is Postmodern cinema? A postmodern film's architecture is characterized by the subversion of the ordinary conventions of narrative structure, rather shaping narrative and meaning by breaking the frame and interrupting the spectator’s suspension of disbelief. Apocalypse Now, Pulp Fiction and Blade Runner use pastiche to knowingly reference moments and icons from other films, genres and media. In this paper I will examine different aspects of postmodern cinema, analyzing narrative structure, storytelling from multiple viewpoints, and the active shaping of meaning and how that affects the spectator’s sense of displacement. As a primary example, I will refer to Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, a film that utilizes a considerable number of these postmodern tactics.

Louise SlyPublished 4 years ago in GeeksA Filmmaker's Guide to: 5 Films by Brian de Palma
Brian de Palma, known for his excellent work with facial expression, a large amount of 'cut to' sequences and obviously, the psychodramatic shaky-cam which made him so utterly loved in the world of cinema. His storylines often coincide with characters of sociopathy and psychopathy, criminality and/or storylines with strong social messages veiled behind a violation of every socially acceptable piece of behaviour known to man.
Annie KapurPublished 4 years ago in GeeksReview of 'Havenfall'
Synopsis Hidden deep in the mountains of Colorado lies the Inn at Havenfall, a sanctuary that connects ancient worlds--each with their own magic--together. For generations, the inn has protected all who seek refuge within its walls, and any who disrupt the peace can never return. For Maddie Morrow, summers at the inn are more than a chance to experience this magic first-hand. Havenfall is an escape from reality, where her mother sits on death row accused of murdering Maddie's brother. It's where Maddie fell in love with handsome Fiorden soldier Brekken. And it's where one day she hopes to inherit the role of Innkeeper from her beloved uncle. But this summer, the impossible happens--a dead body is found, shattering everything the inn stands for. With Brekken missing, her uncle gravely injured, and a dangerous creature on the loose, Maddie suddenly finds herself responsible for the safety of everyone in Havenfall. She'll do anything to uncover the truth, even if it means working together with an alluring new staffer Taya, who seems to know more than she's letting on. As dark secrets are revealed about the inn itself, one thing becomes clear to Maddie--no one can be trusted, and no one is safe . . .

The day? Unknown. My age? The blessed 10. The OG Celebrity Crush? Brad Pitt. I was a very very, late bloomer and am now the textbook definition of a successful "glow-up," so noticing boys or being noticed by boys was non-existent. I was fortunate though to have an older sister who would occasionally hang out with me and dredge all her high school drama, show me films and music, practice makeup on my porcelain pre-hormonal skin, and put me to work clipping celebrities out of magazines so she could Mache them on her closet door.
Books to Check Out: August 2020 Reads
I’m a huge reader, and for some time I’ve been thinking about monthly book recommendations for everything I’m getting into. Thanks to the power of audiobooks, I’ve been getting through a lot of great stuff. So I’ve decided to put together 2-3 books I’ve read during the month and talking a little bit about what makes them appealing. I have a TBR ("to be read", for my mom who will read this) list of about 700 books right now, so I have no shortage of things to read, and of course recommend. I love reading, and I always make an effort to pass along books to people if I genuinely think they’ll like it. So, without further ado, I’ve got three good ones lined up from the month of August.
