Serena TorrePublished 3 years ago in GeeksThe "Perfect Harmony" of Music, Feelings, and Cute Ghosts
I'm known for getting extremely attached and emotionally invested in things very quickly and quite often. Whether it's a band, a movie, a book, or a television series, there are some things that infiltrate my heart and remain there while I obsess over them. Recently, the Netflix original series, Julie and the Phantoms has become that obsession. Not only does it follow a beautiful story, have great music and a strong, young female lead (which we all need more of in our lives), but it also includes three musically inclined male ghosts who have made their way into the hearts of girls everywhere - myself included. What was supposed to be a show created for children, quickly became something that made its way onto the screens of women aged 17-30. Three months after it's premiere, it continues to be discussed among those women on all social media platforms and within group chats all over the world. They can't get enough of Julie and her phantoms, and re-watch the series' one season over and over again while they wait for Netflix to announce a second season.
Lindsay LongacrePublished 3 years ago in GeeksA Filmmaker's Guide to: Roland Barthes
In this chapter of ‘the filmmaker’s guide’ we’re actually going to be learning about literature and film together. I understand that many of you are sitting in university during difficult times and finding it increasingly hard to study and I understand that many of you who are not at university or not planning on it are possibly stuck of what to do, need a break or even need to catch up on learning film before you get to the next level. This guide will be brief but will also contain: new vocabulary, concepts and theories, films to watch and we will be exploring something taboo until now in the ‘filmmaker’s guide’ - academia (abyss opens). Each article will explore a different concept of film, philosophy, literature or bibliography/filmography etc. in order to give you something new to learn each time we see each other. You can use some of the words amongst family and friends to sound clever or you can get back to me (email in bio) and tell me how you’re doing. So, strap in and prepare for the filmmaker’s guide to film studies because it is going to be one wild ride.
Annie KapurPublished 3 years ago in GeeksBook Review: "Henry and June" by Anaïs Nin
Anais Nin, writer of "A Spy in the House of Love", met Henry Miller and his wife June and immediately became intensely involved with both of them. The book is a brilliant presentation of how love manipulates and moves, how it changes over time and how affection is different to obsession. But I think it is also important to think about the way in which it is written sometimes over-the-top and cannot really be comprehended too well. I would say that sometimes the writing can also be a bit annoying because there are far too many words that are not really saying anything. When I was going through to pick out the quotations, I was looking for ones that represented the writing style as something positive and not something that annoyed me slightly.
Annie KapurPublished 3 years ago in GeeksPaul Winchell the voice of Gargamel and Dick Dastardly
Paul Winchell was multifaceted Thanks to the Internet, Cartoon Network, METV, and the Boomerang channel, classic animated television shows can still be enjoyed. I’ve found that as I am watching these cartoons decades later I notice things that I had not before. I had noticed decades ago the similarities between the voices of cartoon characters Dick Dastardly, (Wacky Races, Dick Dastardly and Mutley Show) and Gargamel (The Smurfs). I now know there is a very good reason why.
Cheryl E PrestonPublished 3 years ago in GeeksThe Starless Sea
My New Years Resolution this year was to read more books, and because of that I've found a lot of neat and entertaining books. I also unexpectedly discovered my new favorite book of all time. I don't think anything could ever top the experience this new book gave me. The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern is a masterpiece. I stumbled upon it on Amazon and chose it because of the cover, but truly this book surpassed my expectations. It is 494 pages of glorious fantasy.
