Ema KravanjaPublished 3 years ago in GeeksThe Evolution of American Sitcoms
Pop culture has been a trailblazer for creating ideologies that influence the public's assumptions to uphold a false standard in relations to race, gender, sexuality and class. One of the most influential sources for these set practices is television, a medium that has portrayed situational comedy or Sitcoms prevalently for decades. In the 1980’s, movies and television shows began setting a new basis of what “proper” behavior and physique a man should have by pushing hypermasculine ideals through character portrayal, especially in the television series, “Seinfeld''. In later years, the 90’s sitcom, “The Nanny'' aired during a growing wave of feminism. Some episodes reinforced positive ideologies around women however it can go without being held accountable for having the basis of comedy being surrounded around misogyny and sexism. Now entering the early 2000’s era, the black tv show, “Everybody Hates Chris,” enters pop culture in a white dominated market, bringing more diversity to the television screen while also showing the racial and class issues that the main black characters experience, as opposed to past sitcoms that normally featured white people. This analysis will examine an episode from each sitcom from the 80s,90’s and early 2000’s,that have presented a domestic lifestyle reflecting social ideologies and reinforced unrealistic societal norms.
Madison MartinPublished 3 years ago in GeeksA christmas tale to a mini series
There is just something about Reece Whiterspoon that lights me up. On the outside, she’s got the appropriate, good girl look, but she often plays characters that have a bit of depth. In Four Christmases, she uncovers a more authentic version of herself. The movie is laid out in a Christmases of past like Ebenezer Scrooge. When we are able to view our lives and the different versions we could have explored, we are open to a whole new possibility of who we could be today. There is a comedy, and at times the almost too silly kind of comedy, that reminds me of the caramel that sticks to my teeth.
Claire HunterPublished 3 years ago in GeeksIf One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Then Please Like Me
Please Like Me is an Australian sitcom that depicts mental illness in a respectful, realistic, and honest way. I was having a hard time thinking of what popular movie could be comparable to this show that combines comedy and drama so effortlessly. Then two images or better yet moments went through my mind in slow motion. The scene in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest where Nurse Ratched has the baseball game cut off. To counteract the disappointment of missing the big game, McMurphy rallies his comrades around the turned off television. They pretend like they can still see the game. McMurphy gives a passionate and expressive play-by-play of what he presumes is happening in the game. The rest of the men feed off his electric energy. Their happiness is real. Ratched tried to deny them of a simple pleasure, and they did not allow her. In an environment where there was no space for laughter, self-expression, imagination, or even the slightest amendment of a rule they forged out an instance of real joy for themselves. The opening sequence of Please Like Me is the second moment that I thought of. Each time the show starts with the Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackets “I’ll Be Fine” tune. Josh (the creator and star of the show) is usually dancing to said song while he is cooking, playing with John (the dog), preparing for a meal, or doing other ordinary tasks. We get to see Josh’s pure montages of jubilation. He formulates that feeling for himself, no matter the stress life is spewing at him and there is a plethora of difficulties he is faced with. Josh sings that song, bops his head, cooks gourmet meals, and attempts to will the words of the song into fruition in his life. Two examples of celebration where it is not welcomed, well-received, or expected.

Mohamed RifthyPublished 3 years ago in GeeksMovie Review: 'Nobody'
Hutch is a rather diffident fellow, a serious normie, on the surface. Hutch's life rarely changes from day to day. He has a routine like clockwork, a seriously boring marriage, on the brink of collapse from the weight of apathy, and two normie kids. It appears, again, on the surface, to be a painfully normal existence. And yet, something in Hutch’s manner causes you to wonder about him. His workouts are rather intense for a man whose life is spent behind a bean counter desk.
Sean PatrickPublished 3 years ago in GeeksThe lover l can share.
When l was young, not sure what age exactly but l could not say any words yet. l was told when l cried they would put me in front of a tv and nothing else would silence me faster. This coupled with the fact that my family were tv junkies only added to my obsession.lm a mid 90's baby so l grew up in vadamne, stalone,Jackie chan and Wesley snipes era, and make no mistake this was their era.Action movies seemed to dominate mostly until the early 2000,when a shift started to happen. Tv shows started to gain more flavor in people's eyes and other genres started to gain their footing as well.Soon after a splurge of variety entertainment was unleashed and it was upto your choice what you wanted to watch, and for a while it was amazing. However a lot of tv shows and movies are out in the mainstream now and a guide is needed to find quality from the quantity. In my slightly biased opinion l share my ideal library to those are willing to consume it.l as fan of the questionable finale of game of thrones can tell you if you loved not only the complicated storyline and the medieval setting and slight fantasy of game of thrones, then look not further than Vikings. It is history channel's show about viking history mixed with fiction .If Jon snow's underdog story and rise left a mark on you then ragna lothbrook will surely rekindle your flame. It has kingdoms and betrayal, and even female bad ass warriors "shield maidens". It sits on 6 seasons last time l checked and l promise it is a must watch. If somehow you cannot get enough of vikings there is also the last kingdom now on Netflix .It has Viking life retold in a different way and the ties with England history is there as well.Understandibly medieval-type shows or movies have people asking for more because it gives you a sense of understanding of the past and the contrast with the modern age leaves you feeling happy to be born now.Moving to a different setting of fantasy there are shows and movies for superhero type, marvel and dc which are usually blockbusters and high budgets. If you like dc or marvels films and shows then look no further for a good alternative than the boys.I recommend if like me having seen superman with all that strength you wandered , what if with all that power superman becomes evil what would happen. My answer was given in the form of the boys ,were they shed light to the practical things that might happened if the wrong people were given superpowers. Its blood and gore is on a mortal kombat level so l advise not eating while watching this one.Maybe its too much gore and for the first time you might want to start with the localized version of avengers the defenders. The defenders is low budget but it still packs a punch, with a blend of superhumans from different areas come together and the rest will be too much of a spoiler.Lets move to a different genre, Romantics and comedy are not as popular as action movies because unlike action movies the story takes more than 40 percent to make it good .If it lacks a good story it easily becomes boring as to action movies were a poor story can be saved by well-made action scenes.
If You Loved ‘Inception’: Movies for Vivid Dreamers
Before the 2010 release of Christopher Nolan’s Inception, the power of dreams had been relatively slept on by cinema. “You musn’t be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.” —Eames
The Avengers' Other Movies
Given the staggering box-office returns of 'The Avengers' franchise, it's easy to forget that the performers at the very heart of it aren't just simply Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, Natasha Romanoff, and the rest of the gang.
Christopher DonovanPublished 3 years ago in GeeksIf this you would love that
I love TV. So I used to make determination on my type of day, date, buddies day, and or all three. For example, if it’s a buddy night which is 4 friends binge watching television. I would pick a series so it’s continuous. So my buddies fun night would never in. If it’s a date, than it would be a romantic comedy to lighten the mood. If it’s Halloween month, I would be ready to watch a horror movie or TV series.
Christine EdwardsPublished 3 years ago in GeeksBarney Stinson Fans Rejoice!
The How I Met Your Mother series created one of the most interesting characters in the history of television. The awesomely, always suited up bro named Barney Stinson captivated the hearts and minds of fans of the series. But he isn’t one of the most interesting characters because of his eye-catching, envious suits, his bro code or simply how awesome he is. He is one of the most interesting because he has a unique view of the world, specifically his cinematic tastes. Like many people, Barney was a fan of the hit nostalgia classic movie The Karate Kid. Unlike most people, however, Barney’s karate kid wasn’t Daniel LaRusso. The star of the movie in Barney’s eyes was Johnny Lawrence. If you happen to agree with Barney, then I have some great news for you. You can stop searching the depths of Netflix for your next series because I’ve got two words for you: Cobra Kai.
