Have you seen My Happy Marriage yet?
Just for curiosity's sake, I decided to give "My Happy Marriage" a shot. Normally, I'm more into action-packed anime, but hey, why not step out of my comfort zone and try something new, right?
And after diving in and enjoying (or maybe enduring, still deciding, my patience is being tested) the first five episodes, I'm actually finding myself pretty invested in the story.
You know, most of the romance fiction I've been accustomed to features male love interests who tend to be controlling, jealous, and, well, a bit temperamental. So, encountering characters who are level-headed and genuinely caring about the Main Character feels like a breath of fresh air.
What is My Happy Marriage?
My Happy Marriage (Japanese: わたしの幸せな結婚, Hepburn: Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon) is a Japanese light novel series written by Akumi Agitogi and illustrated by Tsukiho Tsukioka.
The anime is also available to watch on Netflix and currently has five episodes so far.
Synopsis:
During the Meiji Restoration era of the 19th century, Miyo Saimori, lacking any supernatural abilities, endures a life of servitude under her abusive stepmother.
As Miyo reaches the age suitable for marriage, her dreams of a better life are shattered when she learns the identity of her fiancé: Kiyoka Kudou, a seemingly cold and harsh commander whose past brides fled within three days of their engagements.
With no place to call home, Miyo accepts her fate and soon discovers that her soon-to-be husband, pale and handsome, is far from the monster she anticipated.
Through gradual heart-opening, they both realize that they might be each other's path to discovering true love and happiness.
Here's what I've gathered about Kudou and Koji so far (Spoiler Alert!!!):
Even though Kudou's first impression might not have been the best, as the story unfolds, we start seeing his kind-hearted nature. He's willing to help Miyo heal from her trauma without smothering her or becoming overly protective.
Encouraging healthy communication in a relationship is something I'm not used to seeing in the fiction I've encountered so far.
As for Koji, who's another potential love interest, he initially struck me as a bit plain and weak-minded. However, that perception drastically shifted after the final scenes of episode five.
I was half-expecting the typical storyline where he'd just go along with his father's and Kaya's (Miyo's half-sister) plan to win back Miyo's heart. So, imagine my surprise when he actually reached out to Kudou for help in saving her.
This unexpected turn reveals that he's always had her best interests at heart, even if it means letting her go when necessary.
Of course, we are only five episodes in and things can still go awry. Perspectives can change and it is far too early to make judgments.
In Conclusion (so far...)
I genuinely believe that you should check out this anime, especially when you are a big fan of Fruits Basket. It is centered around healing past traumas, and romance, with just the right hint of supernatural.
You may also see me do another blog about this when the first season ends. For now, take my word for it and check out this anime. I would love to know what you think about Kudou and Koji so far!
