Written by Alex Paknadel

Evan should never have gone back to the dead Giga, but he did, and now he’s a murder suspect. Meanwhile, Legs is deteriorating at an alarming rate. The Red King--the oldest and largest of the Giga--is revealed, prophesied to unleash hell on a world whose sins the great mech took into itself centuries earlier. As an old friend of Evan’s returns, he devises a desperate plan to locate the dead Giga’s real killers.

I am really enjoying this book. There is something different about how we see the dynamic of people versus these giant mecha’s who are either dead or sleeping/hibernating. Seeing how Evan lost his legs and now what his life is like now should be sad but the way he leads his life I cannot help but think he’s better off now in some ways. Yes he’s poor and yes he’s got troubles but he’s a free man, a free thinker and he’s doing something with his life that no one had laid out or dictated for him to follow. There is a strength in him that I’m not entirely sure he knew he has within him and this journey we’re following him along is as amazing a coming of age story as anything we’ve had the pleasure to read before.

I am thoroughly enjoying the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is beautifully presented. With how we see this structured and how the layers within are staying prominent we get this whole amazing feel to how everything we see. Whether that be the introduction of new characters or Evan desperately trying to save his friend everything we see feels like it has a genuine purpose without feeling forced into being. The pacing is superb and as we see it take us through the pages revealing the twists & turns along the way we see how beautifully structured the story is. How everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow is remarkably well done.

I love the interiors here. The linework we see is gorgeous and with the varying weights we see this quiet strength to the work that reinforces the idea between human and machine. We are starting to see more utilisation of backgrounds here and it’s a decided improvement now if we could just see a few more. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. The colour work is beautifully rendered. How we see the hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is done with remarkable aplomb. The creativity and imagination that is on display within these pages is nearly magical in it’s scope.

The originality and uniqueness of what we see here is what comics are all about. Getting lost in such a different kind of world and tying it into this science fiction genre is amazing to see. Vault Comics is has emerged as a powerhouse in the industry for the level and quality of work they are bringing us and with such newer voices in the creative world to boot. It is a place where the world can see how voices are showcased, supported and believed in and thus have that admiration passed on to the reader.

Can I also say that Mason is my wildcard in all this as well. There is so much more to him and his mission than meets the eye and I have to believe that he’s not simply using Evan to further his own career. This is how I am invested and engaged in this book, how you become invested and engaged remains your reason alone but when you read this you’ll find something that appeals to you that no one else will have.
