The Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts was cursed until Lord Voldemort died at least that is what people think since it was he who put a curse on the position. When Tom Riddle was a few years out of Hogwarts when he went back to see that Albus Dumbledore was now Headmaster who knew what Riddle might be up to at that moment. Riddle was rejected from this job so he put a curse on it where when a person teaches in that position it is only for one year. The only ones that we know about who only stayed for one year are the teachers Harry had during his years at Hogwarts.

Quirrell was Harry’s first teacher in the DADA position. He died at the end of the year because of Harry, but Harry only did it because Voldemort was on the back of Quirrell’s head which is scary. That is what Voldemort had to do to survive so because of Harry he was stopped in his tracks and the rise to power was slowed down.

Lockheart was Harry’s second DADA professor. He tried to use a powerful memory charm on Harry and Ron but it backfired on him, so he could no longer teach because he couldn’t remember who he was. Before that, he had just told Harry that he was a fraud and stole all the adventures he was known for from great wizards and witches. That he would use a powerful memory charm to erase the witch or wizard’s memories so they wouldn’t remember doing anything.

Lupin was Harry’s third DADA professor. He was by far the best professor Harry ever had. Now he resigned because he knew that after his secret got out that he was a werewolf student’s parents wouldn’t want the children to learn from him. This was the one teacher that his resigning affected Harry because lupin knew Harry’s father really well so Harry heard stories from him. I have to say Harry improved more with lupin than any other teacher he had during his Hogwarts years.

Mad-Eye Moody aka Barty Crouch Jr. a death eater impersonating Moody was Harry’s fourth DADA professor. He was sent back to Azkaban prison when Dumbledore figured out that the person who was at Hogwarts was not the real Mad-Eye Moody but an imposter.

Umbridge was Harry’s fifth DADA professor and she was worse than Moody aka Barty Crouch Jr. She cut Harry’s skin so now he has a scar for the rest of his life. Umbridge tried to take over the school even though nothing worked thanks to the Weasley twins. She ran away from the school while being hit with a cane.

Snape was Harry’s sixth DADA professor. Now he wasn’t bad, he just had a different way of teaching, but he was Harry’s worst nightmare come true. Snape didn’t quit, he just became Headmaster after that year so he stayed at the school until he died the next year.

Carrow was not Harry’s teacher because he skipped school that year, but Carrow was the seventh DADA professor. The subject was changed to Dark Arts, but he still counts to the one year curse. That year in the end Harry and Luna fought the Carrow siblings in the Ravenclaw common room. They never came back because they were either killed or sent to Azkaban for being Death Eaters.

These are seven examples that Tom Riddle cursed the DADA position when he was rejected from the job after he was out of school. No one was able to keep the job until Voldemort died because when he died the curse died with him. If you wanted the job during that time you were doomed from the beginning into teaching for only one year. The Defense Against the Dark Arts position was a dangerous job which is why they had a hard time finding someone after Harry’s fourth year at Hogwarts. Now the job is ok to take. You will be there till you want to resign.
