Here we go again!

I haven't done one of these for a while now, so let's do another list of underappreciated cartoons! Same rules as always, if it was on the previous lists, it won't be here.

Number 5: Lloyd in Space

Haven't seen this in a while (IMDB)

Set in the far future, Lloyd in Space follows an alien teenager named Lloyd who lives on a space station with his mother, younger sister, and friends. The series ran for four seasons from February 3, 2001 to February 27, 2004.

I saw this series on TV when I was a kid and it was a lot of fun to watch. There's no overarching story, each episode is a more or less self-contained story. This makes it easier for new viewers to get into, although, I don't know if it still comes on from time to time.

Number 4: Grim & Evil

A cartoon classic (Deviantart)

Grim and Evil was a segmented show that ran for two seasons from 2001 - 2004. Each episode had two segments, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, and Evil Con Carne.

  • The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy follows a pair of neighborhood kids who befriend the grim reaper and they go on various comical escapades.
  • Evil Con Carne follows a would-be dictator who wants to take over the world. This man's brain is disembodied and attached to a silly circus bear and go through various comedic hi-jinks where their schemes go awry.

Much like the other series on this list, Grim and Evil is largely ignored.

Number 3: My Life as a Teenage Robot

An entertaining romp (MUBI)

My Life as a Teenage Robot follows a female robot named XJ9 - also called Jenny - as she navigates trying to have a normal human life while keeping the world safe from would-be conquerors.

The show ran for two 13-episode seasons on Nickelodeon from 2003 to 2005 and one season on Nicktoons. This one I didn't really get into that much, it's well animated and there's a lot of fun to be had, but I got bored pretty quickly.

That said, I found the re-runs to be very entertaining. Sadly, as entertaining as the series was, the ratings were quite poor. These poor ratings led to the show's cancellation.

Number 2: Time Squad

2000s shows had some weird aesthetics (Rotten Tomatoes)

Set in a world where Earth has become a peaceful utopia and there are no problems to solve. This has led to the formation of the Time Squad - a police unit that travels through time to make sure historical events and figures stay on track.

This one was just plain fun to watch as a kid and looking back on the various compilations of the show was a huge dose of childhood nostalgia. The show ran for two seasons from 2001 to 2003 and is an absolute gem - especially if you're looking for a fun way to teach your kids about history.

Number 1: Mona the Vampire

Mona the Vampire and her sidekick Fang (Soundcloud)

Based on a children's book of the same name, Mona the Vampire is a Canadian animated series that aired from 1999 to 2006. There were a total of 65 episodes spanning four seasons.

The story follows Mona Parker, a girl with a vivid imagination who imagines herself as a vampire and goes on adventures with her cat sidekick Fang and friends.

Mona the Vampire was met with a positive reception with praise being aimed at the witty writing and characters. There are very few mentions of this series nowadays which is kind of depressing considering the quality of the show.

That was a Fun Ride!

That was fun, three entries in and I'm pretty sure I could turn this into its own little franchise at this point! Thanks for joining me on this trip down memory lane, I hope y'all feel as old as I do at this point :)

Take care, everyone!

THIS IS PURE GENIUS! Cartoons are one of the side effects of society that I actually enjoyed. I might go digging in the archives for some of these. Thank you for writing and sharing!
