Zombies have infected all forms of entertainment over the last several years with big screen hit films like 28 Days Later, World War Z and Zombieland and small screen addictions like iZombie, Z Nation and the ever-popular The Walking Dead.

We've even seen #zombies trudge through the pages of several comics between #Marvel, Army of Darkness and #TheWalkingDead and it doesn't look as though the zombie apocalypse is stopping any time soon. And as much as we've wanted a Walking Dead game, most of what we've gotten is either rough — or Telltale's plodding (even if well-written) narratives.

If you're like me then zombies are probably a bit of a guilty pleasure to watch, and you're likely still reeling from the season finale of The Walking Dead. As you wait to find out what's going to happen to the faithful Alexandrian's in the next season, perhaps it's a great time to tell you that soon you'll be able to play one of the most anticipated new zombie games - that will make you feel like you're living in a world much like we've seen in The Walking Dead.

Now for anyone not living in the gaming world, Sony has been a standout in terms of delivering excellent first party exclusives recently. Considering that only a few months into 2017, Sony is being lauded with praise for several exclusive titles:

  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Nioh
  • Gravity Rush 2
  • Persona 5

These four games has launched the PlayStation 4 into the limelight as the console to own in terms of original content, and recent leaks across the internet are only adding fuel to the fire that Sony has lit.

Leaks tell us 'Days Gone' is out August 22, 2017.

Earlier this month Austrian retailer GamesOnly posted a release date of August 22 for the highly anticipated open-world zombie adventure, Days Gone.

Days Gone comes from SIE Bend, a Sony owned first party developer which much like Horizon Zero Dawn's Gorrilla Games has been stymied by being tied to one singular series for several years. SIE Bend is most well known for the 3rd-person stealth series, Syphon Filter from the early '00s. Days Gone looks to be a start contrast to what we've seen from the team, and it's a bold move for Sony.

Days Gone looks as though it's primed for an incredible success after initial showings at E3 and the gameplay released earlier this January.

The official synopsis reads as follows:

Set in the beautiful, volcanic scarred high-desert of the Pacific Northwest, Days Gone is an open-world action-adventure game where you play as Deacon St. John, a Drifter and bounty hunter who would rather risk the dangers of the broken road than live in one of the “safe” wilderness encampments. The game takes place two years after a global pandemic has killed almost everyone, but transformed millions of others into what survivors call Freakers – mindless, feral creatures, more animal than human but very much alive and quickly evolving. In the demo you saw two types of Freaks – Newts, which were adolescents when infected, are opportunistic hunters, preferring to hit and run from the shadows; and a Horde. Made up of hundreds of individual Freakers, Hordes eat, move and attack together, almost as one. Some Hordes roam the highways at night, while others, like the one in the demo, have found a food source that keeps it in a single location. Skills learned in his prior life as an outlaw biker have given Deacon a slight edge in the seemingly never-ending fight to stay alive. But will it be enough?
This is a brutal world, where everyone and everything is struggling to survive – but hopefully, the trailer shows that the game is about more than that. It’s about desperation, hope, transformation, loss, madness, discovery, friendship, exploration, brotherhood, regret and love. In the end, Days Gone is about what makes us human. It’s about how even when confronted with such enormous tragedy, we find a reason to live. Hope never dies.

Regardless of how you feel about the reality of a zombie apocalypse, it sounds as though Days Gone will be setting you in a world similar to The Walking Dead where you have the choice of fight or flight at every turn. The game will take the zombie genre to all new levels by transitioning from the linear levels of other zombie games like Lollipop Chainsaw, State of Decay or Left 4 Dead to the open world action like Dead Island and Dying Light.
