BattleBit Remastered – Better than BF 2042

It wasn't hard, but it's still worth noting.

I’ve never really gotten super into the Battlefield series, with the exception of Bad Company 2. I genuinely enjoyed the heck out of that game and put the most amount of time into it than any other BF game. BF 4 is second but it doesn’t even come close. However, when Battlefield 2042 was initially teased I like most people was excited! It looked better than COD at the time, and was hopefully going to be a good supplement to Tarkov as a game I can relax and just enjoy with some friends messing around in. In the wake of that games’ release... we didn’t get that. Far from it, in fact; which is a shame. I’m not a diehard BF fan, but they are great games and I enjoy them casually from time to time. But there is a game in Beta currently that gives me nothing but the best feeling from the BF series, and it’s Battlebit Remastered.

Now I KNOW the first thing that popped into your head looking at the game is the graphics. Yes, it looks like a cross between Minecraft and Roblox, but it doesn’t really matter in the long term. Your eyes will get used to the super blocky character and hand models. The guns however, look super clean, and the optics are SO amazing in this game. I don’t know how they managed to make them look so crips and sharp, but each one from the footage I’ve seen look so sick to use. The maps are very interesting and diverse, with a ton of different types of scenery and landscapes for you to explore; which is a boon considering they have that Battlefield complexity with buildings that can be destroyed and a large variety of ways to navigate for potential flanking opportunities. They even have night versions of the maps with full NVG’s which I haven’t played but witnessed and it looks like an incredible experience to have at least once. There’s a general emphasis on squads and playing around them just like BF, and it encourages you to play a little more methodically instead of so recklessly like COD because your teammates can spawn on you for quick reinforcements if you’re pushing an objective. And the funniest part is that everyone by default is hot miced on death, so you can sometimes hear people call out to their teammates or say something silly. In general, people have fun with it and don’t take it too seriously which is refreshing. We’re all just running around shooting each other and trying to get revived by medics so we can play more and don’t have to make the run of shame back from the furthest respawn point.

The progression in the game is something to hail as well; it feels just like a Battlefield game; with a large variety of weapons at your disposal that you unlock as you progress and level up. And each gun has an assortment of attachments that can be unlocked after killing X number of enemies. From optics, to lasers and muzzle devices; there’s a fair bit here for customization. And they have camo’s as well for those who are in it for the long haul. Classic guns like the M4, Ak, Scar all make a return. And there are some guns I’ve never seen before so there is definitely something here for anyone. The class system is very similar with assault, support, medic, and recon available depending on what you feel like playing and guns are tied to those classes, again, just like Battlefield. Hm, I wonder where they got their inspiration from?

Anyways, what I have enjoyed from the maybe little over an hour I have played, is that it’s just a fun game. The servers range anywhere from 32v32 all the way up to 127v127 which is what is in the background. And man, does that get chaotic sometimes. It feels like such a traditional BF experience, it blows my mind how 2042 fucked it up SO badly. I mean, it actually doesn’t; it’s EA we’re talking about, but you know what I mean. The year that game came out it should’ve been a slam dunk. COD was disappointing a lot of people myself included, and from the first trailer it looked like Dice was doing everything right to swing the fans on their side. But that wasn’t the case. At least now, we have a very competent game that scratches that itch and then some. The only quirk about the game, is that since it’s in beta, they game isn’t always just available to jump in and play. They open it up for only a few hours here and there. You can request access and download the game for free right now, but you will most likely not be able to play. If you really want to get your hands on it, you should join their discord server to be notified when the game will go live. Or, you can pay attention to the steam store page, because they’re pretty good at keeping people informed there as well.

It’s crazy that we have to resort to smaller development teams to make the games that we want to play. But I’m glad they’re doing it because there is actual passion and care put into Battlebit. Again, it’s still in development, and will continue to get better overtime, so if you do manage to play the game, make sure you give them some good constructive feedback so they can make the Battlefield game we actually want to play. This game is a reminder that when large companies fail to deliver what the fans want, sometimes it’s up to the fans themselves to deliver that experience. This game is what Battlefield 2042 should’ve been, but hey, screw EA and Dice; I’ll take Battlebit any day of the week. Here’s to hoping they get the support they need to make a great game; I’ll be playing any chance I get and trying to rope in some friends during the process; would be fun with some more chaos in a discord call or something of the like. I highly recommend at least requesting access and downloading it. It’s free after all, and once they open the servers up next time, which it seems like most weekends they try to do it for at least a couple hours, give it a shot and let me know down in the comments what you think.
