The April Info You Didn't Know You Wanted

All the reasons to remember and the people to celebrate in April.

I was wondering what was special about April, besides April Fools Day. Here’s what I found. April is a month full of interesting history, dates, and celebrations of people from all around the world. Check out everything from the return of baseball to who's going to circle around the moon and back.

  1. April Fools Day. This is a favorite of mine. It’s an entire day dedicated to jokes and pranks.
  2. Wrestlemania Hits Hollywood. The annual event that is the world series of wrestling hits California on April 1st for a two-night event culminating in the biggest match of the year, Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title.
  3. International Black Women’s History Month. A month to celebrate the lives and accomplishments of black women in the world. These include such women Opra Winfrey and Michelle Obama but can include all of the black women in your life.
  4. Easter Sunday. A holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus and is known for a magical bunny leaving candy-filled eggs. It usually falls between March 22nd and April 25th. It’s right around the corner this year as it’s on April 9th.
  5. Earth Day. This day is dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and protection. This year it’s on April 22nd. Check your local events to see how you can promote Earth Day or participate in a local park or lake clean-up effort.
  6. National Poetry Month. April is recognized as National Poetry Month in the United States, a celebration of poetry and its importance in culture and society.
  7. Tax Day. This is the deadline for filing income tax returns in the United States. This year it’s on April 18th.
  8. Arbor Day (last Friday in April). A day dedicated to planting and caring for trees, and promoting their importance in our environment.
  9. International Dance Day. This day celebrates the art of dance and its cultural significance around the world.
  10. Holocaust Remembrance Day (April 28th). A day of commemoration for the victims of the Holocaust, which was the persecution and genocide of over six million people.
  11. World Health Day. A day dedicated to promoting health and wellness around the world, with a focus on a specific health-related theme each year. Post Covid, this is bound to be a big deal and is on April 7th.
  12. National Park Week. A week-long celebration of America’s national parks, with special events and free admission to parks on certain days, beginning on April 22nd according to the National Park Services website.
  13. Boston Marathon — An annual marathon held on Patriot’s Day in Boston, Massachusetts, attracting runners and spectators from around the world. This year's event is being held on April 17th according to the Boston Athletic Association website.
  14. Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday. The actual birthday of Queen Elizabeth II is on April 21st, but it is usually celebrated in the United Kingdom on the second Saturday in June.
  15. Earth Week. Enjoy a week-long celebration of environmentalism and sustainability, with events and activities, focused on promoting conservation and reducing waste. This year's events are April 17–22nd.
  16. National Library Week. How about a week-long celebration of libraries and the important role they play in communities, with special events and activities for all ages. Check out your local library from April 23rd — April 29th this year.
  17. Administrative Professionals Day. A day to recognize and appreciate the hard work and dedication of administrative professionals, such as secretaries, receptionists, and administrative assistants. If you have a job that has an assistant, secretary, or receptionist, don’t forget April 26th.
  18. National Volunteer Week. A week-long celebration of volunteerism and community service, with events and activities to encourage people to get involved and make a difference. Do your part April 16–22nd, 2023. Even if it’s just a scheduled blood donation.
  19. Passover. This is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt, typically occurring in April. This year it begins on Wednesday, April 5th, and ends Thursday, April 13.
  20. Anzac Day. A national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that commemorates the sacrifice of soldiers who fought in the First World War. This year the remembrance will be on Tuesday, April 25th.
  21. World Book Day is a day to celebrate books and reading, with events and activities promoting literacy and education around the world. Plan some time to sit and read on April 23rd, 2023.
  22. Shakespeare’s birthday. William Shakespeare, the famous playwright, and poet was born on April 23rd, and his birthday is celebrated by many literature enthusiasts and theater groups.
  23. National Pet Month. A month-long celebration of pets and their importance in our lives, with events and activities promoting responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.
  24. Record Store Day. April 22nd, 2023, is a day dedicated to supporting independent record stores and promoting the sale of vinyl records and other physical music media.
  25. National Autism Awareness Month. A month-long campaign to raise awareness and understanding of autism spectrum disorders, with events and activities, focused on promoting acceptance and inclusion.
  26. National Financial Literacy Month. A month-long campaign to promote financial literacy.
  27. The First Full Month Of Baseball Season. This year Major League Baseball returned on March 30th. So, April is the first full month of baseball season that fans will go wild.
  28. Go Fly A Kite Day. On April 16th this year, and on the third Sunday in April, it’s National Go Fly A Kite Day. So, do as the day says, get outside, and fly a kite.
  29. No Housework Day. April 7th is National No Housework Day. So, celebrate by being a little lazy that day. It’s alright, it’s a holiday.
  30. Artemis II Announcement. On April 3rd, this Monday, the team that will make the first flight outside of Earth's low orbit will be announced by NASA.

There are thirty of the most interesting days and things to remember, celebrate, and participate in during the Month of April. There are others, like national pillow fight day, sweet potato day, and escort day. That last one might be a joke as it seems unconfirmable. Enjoy April, and be good to one another.

    Fun & informative. Lots of things I didn't know. Just one editorial note: While technically correct (since the mission is to go around the moon & not land on it), are you sure you wanted to say, "circumvent the moon"? While "circumvent" does mean "to find a way around (an obstacle)", it seems kind of odd to use it when orbiting the moon is its destination or purpose. Just thought I'd raise the question.
