Deep learning and neural network research by Dr. Jeffrey Hinton opened the path for modern AI systems like chat GPT. But he now regrets his work and is worried that AI technology will flood the internet with misinformation. The truth is, AI is very scary. But it's not a secret that this is by far the best invention for our current and future generations.

Why Dr. Hinton left Google

Dr. Hinton got his 'Godfather' name from decades of research on AI. After he resigned he said on multiple interviews that he is no longer comfortable pushing the boundaries of AI development without any kind of regulation or stopgap. He continues to say that he doesn't think they sshould scale AI up more untill they have understood whether they can control it. He futher shared his concerns that AI would lead to massive job disruptions around the world.

AI vs HI

The kind of intelligence being developed is very different from the intelligence we have. We are biological systems and these are digital systems. The big difference is that with digital systems you have many copies of the same model and all these copies can learn separately but share their knowledge instantly.

It's as if you had 10 000 people and whenever one person learns something everybody automatically knows it. That's how these chats can know so much more than any one person.

The data that AI systems are educated on and the manner in which those data are tied to a particular occurence determines the degree of control or power that AI systems have over decision-making. Artificial Intelligence will never be able able to comprehend the idea of 'action and rection' since they do not have any sensibility. Only humans have the capacity to learn, comprehend, and then put their learned information to use by combining it with their comprehension, rationality, and thinking.

Dangers of AI

Influential people like Elon Musk have warned us about the dangers of AI. These technologies can amass and process information so effectively that if you put them in the wrong hands they could turn into a weapon. One of the challenges with these chat Bots is we don't fundamentally understand how they work. We know that they absorb large amounts of information then you can input a prompt and it will give you an output. It might write an essay for you, it might generate an image or a video.

I think what concerns Dr. Jeffrey Hinton is that there could be unintended consequences in these systems behaving in ways that are very different from humans. There's no real account for how they will go about achieving their objectives, especially if those objectives are rooted in some kind of malicious intent.

One of the most terrifying examples of how AI can be dangerous is in the context of autonomous weapons. If AI technology is integrated into weapons systems without appropriate safeguards and human oversight, it could lead to unintended consequences. For instance, an autonomous weapon equipped with AI might incorrectly identify targets or make decisions that violate ethical and legal norms. Without human intervention and judgment, there is a risk of these weapons causing harm to civilians.

The future

We have to adopt some spirit of optimism and recognize that we do have a huge degree of human intelligence as well and now more than ever we need to summon. One thing that Dr. Jeffrey Hinton does emphasize is that digital intelligence is very different from human intelligence and that may present an opportunity for us to tap into our human strengths and understand how we can behave and cooperate with one another in ways that might allow us to regulate these Technologies and Reign them in. The ability of AI to perceive and turn human intentions into software instructions is what will make the next generation of no-code software creation a reality. With AI managing the large swaths of repetitive and often mundane workstreams associated with app development, humans will be free to invent, innovate, and problem-solve.
