New Report Suggests The Mandalorian Season 3 Will Premiere Late 2022

Just In Time For The Holidays

With the conclusion of The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+, it is hardly surprising that the attention of the fans is once again focusing on The Mandalorian Season 3. This is expected given the prominent role that the titular Mandalorian played in The Book of Boba Fett. The question on everyone’s lips is, when will we get to see the return of The Mandalorian on Disney+?. According to a new report, we could be getting to see The Mandalorian Season 3 around Christmas time, so at the end of December 2022.

TVLine’s Matt Webb Mitovich was asked in one of his Inside Line pieces if he had any insight into when The Mandalorian Season 3 might debut. His response:

“It is a safe bet that Season 3 will premiere this year, probably around Life Day [or] Christmastime.”

One could argue that this scoop is not really inside information and more like a very well-educated guess. Lucasfilm has already confirmed that the limited television series Obi-Wan Kenobi will be making its streaming debut on May 25th and the Rogue One spin-off show Andor is scheduled for a mid to late 2022 debut on Disney+. Given that Andor Season 1 is reported to have a twelve-episode run it makes perfect sense for The Mandalorian Season 3 to be lined up for late December 2022.

Ever since Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, Star Wars events have mainly been associated with the winter holiday period. All the Disney era Star Wars movies have been released in late December as seen with The Force Awakens (2015), Rogue One (2016), The Last Jedi (2017), and The Rise of Skywalker (2019). The only exception was Solo (2018), which had a May release. In retrospect, I am sure that Disney and Lucasfilm regret changing the Solo premiere slot, and if they could do it all again they would have stuck to the December time slot that they had been running with to date. Looking ahead, we even have Patty Jenkins’s Rogue Squadron currently penciled in for a December 22, 2023 release date.

On the television front, the releases have historically been lined up for the end of the year. The Mandalorian Season 1 was released on November 12, 2019, with Season 2 following on October 30, 2020. Season 1 of The Bad Batch animated series took a classic Star Wars date and came out on May 4, 2021. Then, Star Wars: Visions had a September 22, 2021 release.

The Book of Boba Fett entered our lives on December 29, 2021, following the end of the year release pattern of The Mandalorian. Obi-Wan Kenobi is officially coming out on May 25, 2022 to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the release of Star Wars, the film we now all know and love as A New Hope. Disney and Lucasfilm seem to be treating The Mandalorian and its spin-off The Book of Boba Fett as its headliner and featured main attraction. It makes sense that they would keep a degree of consistency by looking to release The Mandalorian Season 3 near the end of the year. This becomes even more likely when we factor in how Andor is due to be released probably mid-year. Although nothing is confirmed yet, they might sneak in The Bad Batch Season 2 at some point too (well we can dream, right?).

With The Book of Boba Fett running as The Mandalorian Season 2.5, there is no doubt that fans are hyped for The Mandalorian Season 3. Disney and Lucasfilm are bound to make us wait to build up the excitement. Thus, the report of an end-of-year release for The Mandalorian Season 3 seems very plausible.
