Children of the Prophecy Chapter 3: The Prophecy

This is part of a series, links to the previous parts are in the story. In this chapter the siblings hear the prophecy. Here is the story abstract: Thulia and Yethia have lived alone in a forest for as long as they could remember. Then everything changed when the forest was burnt to ashes around them, forcing them to confront their destiny. As told in a prophecy, these two children must fight the evil that had taken control of the land.

“Tell us what mommy?” Yethia asked.

“You two aren’t ordinary children, you two could fit into a prophecy, that would lead you two into a very dangerous future -” with tears forming in her eyes, she started to explain before getting cut off.

“So, this is where you are Amuthia,” the mother looked up as an elderly woman called her name. The woman was dressed in a simple baggie shirt, skirt, and blue shawl. Her long gray hair landed, unrestrained, across her face and down past her shoulders. “I see the children are alive, to have survived that fire they really must be the ones,” with that, she took a seat next to Amuthia.

“You know how we made it through the fire!?” Thulia's voice was laced with excitement, hope, and wonder.

“I know that, and more child,” the old lady smiled first at the girl, then at her brother, “I have a story for the two of you. Do you like stories?” they nodded eagerly awaiting the tale. “Good, get comfortable this is a long one!”

“Lykubu, surely you’re not going to tell them everything!” Amuthia asked nervously.

“They're already in too deep to withhold information from them, Amuthia, they survived the fire, they have to be the ones and it was probably Oklumu who burnt down the entire forest, we need to act, who knows what his next move will be!”

The children were getting more and more confused by the second but were too nervous to interrupt. They just wanted to hear the story.

The mother let out a defeated, “fine,” giving Lykubu permission to proceed.

“Ok children, back to the story! So, on to the prophecy! A long time ago, when this land was in a time of peace and harmony, there was a prophecy that the land would be controlled by evil, and his rain would be cruel and unrelenting,” despite not knowing what some of those words meant, Yethia and Thulia were already captivated, “his downfall was also in the prophecy. Two siblings, half ispenupa, born four winters apart, could wield The Ininka, the Swords of Yore, they would be able to tap into the powers of The Ininka and then they could bring peace back onto this land,” the old lady finished.

The children were confused but held their questions until she was done, after a moment they realized that she was done and Thulia brought up her first question: "What’s an ispenupa?”

“I’ll take this one, Lykubu,” Amuthia put her hand on her shoulder. “So there are two types of people in this world, humans, and ispenupa, most people are humans, people with no animal characteristics, and then there are ispenupa, those people are blessed with physical and mental traits of an animal, they are born with magical clothing and color that they would wear for their entire lives. They also have a headband with a mark that represents that animal.”

The siblings looked at each other's headbands, the paw prints on a blue cloth, and an owl's talon marks. They thought about everything they knew about themselves and each other. “So we’re, ispenupa?” the young girl stated, putting the pieces together.

“Not quite, sweetie, I’m human, but your father was ispenupa, so the two of you are half ispenupa-”

“Like in the prophecy...” whispered Yethia, getting a nod from the adults. “Does that mean theirs an evil ruler?” he added.

“Smart kid, yes there is an evil ruler right now and you're in one of the Ulkulanu hideouts,” Lykubu saw the siblings’ confusion and answered the question before they could ask, “the Ulkulanu is the name of the resistance force,”

“What makes him so evil?” Thulia inquired.

The adults exchanged a glance before Amuthia spoke. “Let’s not talk about that now, I don’t want you having nightmares, I think it’s time for you two to go to bed. I’ll take you to where you’ll sleep,” with that she led the confused children through a maze of underground rooms and corridors, for most of the trip, the only light source came from the single torch that Amuthia carried. Everything was made out of compressed dirt, except for the occasional wooden support beam. They were rushed through one well-lit room that had multiple people. They all stared and whispered. The siblings quickly got hopelessly lost. Eventually, they stopped at a small room with two empty beds, the beds were made out of straw with fabric sheets. They were ushered into separate beds and tucked in by their mom. Those beds were much itchier than their soft fur ones. She just stared at her confused children with a look of longing, tears swelling in her eyes. Before she went over to give both of them a good night forehead kiss. She went to leave, but lingered at the entrance before leaving with a final “sweet dreams,” and an “I love you.”

Yethia and Thulia were left alone in an unfamiliar, unnaturally dark place.
