Nancy Screw and the Coming of Age (18+) Chapter 21
Chapter 21 A Secluded Shed Nancy found herself about thirty minutes later feeling stranded like the car. She kept along the road that seemed to come full-circle in the darkness that haunted it. Ghost Pines was kind of like that. There were many parts that seemed to disband and then rejoin at inconvenient places. It was not newcomer friendly in that manner. Even Nancy, who had grew up just outside of the community, had trouble navigating it in the off chance she found herself there. Still, she found herself following the road that lead into the heart, coming across no other cross street. But as she came up to the next turn in the road she stopped to catch her breath and to listen. Her ears grew more receptive to her surroundings as her breath reached a lazy pace. She could hear crickets in the distance, the croak of bullfrogs, and the sound of an owl’s hoot, manifesting a nervous calm. But Nancy liked all of nature’s orchestra. It took her back to childhood fishing and camping trips to Mt. Admiral. She breathed in the night air; it, too, was full of richness from the springtime blossoms. She smiled at these memories and continued on along the new stretch of road. Before long, Nancy found herself in a dense part of the woods that the little moonlight that had been let in all the while, couldn’t breach. And, as the road led into it, she found herself perplexed and almost hypnotized by a single light off in the distance. It looked like a house. Nancy advanced along the safety of the road in an effort to quickly close the gap. Within five minutes she found herself a few hundred feet from the source; a small wooden shed. And there, partially dignified by the light, was the elusive vehicle the three had been following. Nancy looked for a way to sneak up to the building in a safe and accommodating manner, but found none and was forced to trudge through the pitch black, save for a sliver of light to guide her to their location. Nancy braved it and took her chances. She moved slowly, doing her best to avoid snapping any brittle twigs or falling and maiming herself. Anything to stay conscious and quiet.

Chapter 20 A Near Miss The three girls found themselves at the bottom of Monte View Way just as the car with Margaret and the man disappeared around a corner veering to the left. Beth stopped for the intersection and then continued along the road. She made sure to maintain her distance so she could forsake the disadvantage of turning her lights off. It was still all too risky. As Beth’s car approached the corner where the two before them had disappeared around, they caught a glimpse of their taillights once more, which flashed as they disappeared and reappeared in amongst the growing density of trees. They were heading towards Ghost Pines, a secluded community that was nestled secretly amongst great firs and maples, which acted as a natural dome; keeping the cruelties of the elements out. From time to time, Nancy questioned the name. Had there once been pines here? The name leaned towards yes, but no one could really confirm.

Chapter 19 The Road to Ruin Nancy sat in the car with Beth and Janet by her side, nursing her wounds. She was lucky that the backpack from the first stakeout was still nestled safely in Beth’s car and that one of the things they remembered to bring last minute was a first aid kit. You never know when you might need it. Silence took over as Beth and Janet tended to Nancy. Finally, Nancy spoke.

Chapter 18 Digging Up the Dirt The following morning Nancy almost overslept. She woke up and got ready in a frenzy. Her parents were downstairs. They had no clue about last night. Nancy knew when they were on to her about something. It was rare, but there were those times where she had let her innocence slip and they had found out about it. This time, however, had eluded them. Nancy’s eyes were still half-closed when she smelled the nauseatingly sweet aroma of fresh-brewed coffee and remembered how it had, among other things, perked her right up out of her dismal surroundings of the Riverside Police Station. Oh Officer Bradley, God bless him.

Chapter 17 Cell Mates The whole way to the station Nancy questioned her actions; not in the way that any other person in her situation would, but in the methods and operation of the way she had investigated. How did they know I was there? What tracks did I leave uncovered? In my haste I was so thorough. Nancy shook her head in her inward frustrations at her carelessness. What tipped them off? It wasn’t long before they arrived at their destination. The patrol car stopped and the two officers got out. Shortly thereafter the right side opened and Nancy was escorted out and led to a secured door. The three disappeared inside.

Chapter 14 The Stakeout Morning came sooner than the three had expected. The sunlight woke them up at around 10 a.m. and brought a burst of energy within the three. The night before they had decided that they would hang out for a bit and wait for church to be out. People would be heading out to do some chores then and the three would have to be patient until mid-afternoon, when they decided it would be best to go out in search of the locket’s owner. But for now the three decided that it was too beautiful to be cooped up inside and that their hunger was pressing them to go out for the Sunday Special at Valley Pharmacy and Malts.

Chapter 2 The Call Nancy had felt release about the time Billy had. And now she was alone on her bed, looking up at the ceiling and other, more interesting surroundings displayed about her room. Billy had gone soon after. He never really stuck around like she wanted him to. This time, however, it didn’t bother her so much. He mind was much more concerned about the poor, unfortunate Mr. Charles Turner. Nancy got up off the bed, shot to her dresser, and picked out some pajama bottoms and a loose fitting Tee. She ran her fingers through her hair and slumped upon the couch with her story in reach.
