Microfiction: Snow Challenge

The Dragon of Winter protected the ice dome that housed his Queen. They flew over the lands daily to keep the world covered in a cold glacier, punishing the villagers for not appreciating the seasons with their complaints about heat waves, rainy days, and freezing temperatures.

When the Queen could not bear to hear such people whining, she and the Dragon of Winter stormed the Summer castle, leaving icy trails of fear in their wake.

The Queen loved the pandemonium she stirred by plunging the land into a frosty embrace. The Dragon of Winter would soar high in the frostbite azure sky, releasing a new snowy covering from his spittle. The force of his roar would send freezing winds howling through the breakable trees.

The chilly wind left scars on the villagers' skin, as the ice chips would bite into their faces. They couldn't keep a fire going long enough to heat their homes as the freezing winds enveloped their huts in frosty ice.

The moanful echos of crunching snow and the snapping of tree branches from heavy icicles were the only melodies playing in the forest of snow.

After hours of leaving jagged icicles across the lands, the Dragon of Winter would return to his perch to protect his mistress below. Her voice softly sang:

"Snow

may you grow

with crystalized snowflakes

that ride

on my dragon's breath's blow.

Keep my lands

in a white blanket of cold.

For these villages will freeze in my temps of zero degrees."
