They're coming.

I know what fears dwell within you.

They're coming.

I know what terrors you can't face.

They're coming.

I know what plagues your mind.

They're coming.

There's been a weight upon your soul, brought on by the things you've done, and the things you didn't do.

They're coming.

Those nightmares you've had? They won't just go away.

They're coming.

When you rise, they follow you into the waking world.

They're coming.

They'll hunt you down, stalk your every step just to whisper your transgressions in your ear.

They're coming.

You can't run from them, as they're attached to you, and will never let you escape.

They're coming.

You're never alone, even when you think you are.

They're coming.

They watch you in the shadows, and from the corners of your eyes.

They're coming.

They laugh when you try to hide, they laugh when you run, and they'll laugh when you scream when they finally stop watching and cast judgment upon you.

They're coming.

You will fail their test.

They're coming.

You will suffer for your sins.

They're coming.

You will not be spared.

They're coming.

You will be punished for your crimes.

They're coming.

You will be cast down into the depths of the Abyss, a place of darkness and desolation.

They're coming.

You will be forgotten.

They're coming.

There will be a reckoning, and it will be yours to pay.

They're coming.

No prayer in the world will save you or absolve you from their wrath.

They're coming.

There's no redemption in their eyes, for they've seen enough.

They're coming.

They've seen all your dirty acts. They know every skeleton in your closet. They even know the names of each unfortunate victim who was affected by your wrongs.

They're coming.

Was it worth it?

They're coming.

Was hurting others on your quest for power and wealth worth it?

They're coming.

Did selling your soul for the sake of your abhorant ambitions bring you the happiness you sought?

They're coming.

You thought greed would cost you nothing, but you are so very, very wrong.

They're coming.

The price you'll pay for such exorbitancy is higher than you can imagine.

They're coming.

An amount that can never be repaid.

They're coming.

Oh, yes. They're coming, and you think you've gotten away with everything.

They're coming.

No. They let you amass your sins, for it'll be all the more delicious when they claim you.

They're coming.

Their satisfaction will be further sweetened by your death cries.

They're coming.

You shouldn't have been so careless.

They're coming.

You shouldn't have been so cruel.

They're coming.

You shouldn't have been so dismissive of the lives of others.

They're coming.

Maybe if you had considered the consequences of your foul actions, your fate could've been prevented.

They're coming.

But because you hadn't,

They're coming.

because you elevated yourself above all else,

They're coming.

the demons you let in are all now coming for you.

THEY'RE COMING.

You wanted immortality, and so you shall have it.

THEY'RE COMING.

For the rest of time, you'll exist in a perpetual state of regret; of guilt; of sorrow; of shame; in a purgatory of your own making.

...

Ah, yes. I can sense your fear as it is well-founded, and you should be afraid

.

.

.

because they're here.

The repetition in this kept increasing the tension with each line. Very well done. Congrats on Top Story.

    Nice job! Very haunting.

  • Oooh eternal retribution. What could be scarier? Congrats on the TS

I'm afraid I didn't find this spooky so much as terrifying. I read as I kind of commentary on modern life in a "western" culture.

I love the formatting. Love the imposing feel of it all. With the repeated phrase "They're coming"...damn this was good. Thank you for entering into my little challenge. You did give me some chills and left me pondering with every verse what the character did to face such terror and impending horror. Repetition is one of my favourite tools and you used it so well! Well done, Brin!

  • Why, I do declare this just full to the "Brin" of Dr. Faustus-style horror & regret. Well done.

  • I sang this like a song to my own tune. The repetition of "They're coming" is what made me start singing it in the first place. It was so cool!
