The Sparrow Saga 2: The Yellow Rift

The dreams that come back to haunt...

By Sara SparrowPublished about a year ago 3 min read

The ship was in sight. The escape was near. In about two hundred metres the Sparrow will be on the ship and in the far-off galaxy, alone, with no more worries in the world. Tearing through the trees she felt the blood pumping quickly in her fingertips, her heart was racing, and a massive adrenaline shot through her brain. The noise of the sirens behind her were getting louder each second, she learnt to ignore it in the past twenty minutes. The door of the centre was open, a perfect escape, in fact it wasn’t perfect, it was brilliant.

In she flew and quickly scanned the ships. They were all too big, she doesn’t know how to navigate the big ones. The small ones at the back catch her eye. She knows what to do. This is too brilliant, she -

The Sparrow wakes with a start, a bottle falling to the floor woke her up. It was just a dream... it was just a dream... it was just a dream... the girl holds her head trying to forget the nightmare she just had. At least Karen wasn’t in it, that would have been worse. 9.10AM. She quickly runs to the bathroom to relieve herself.

Walking out the bathroom, stretching and yawning her stomach cries out for food. To the cupboard she goes. Breakfast items, there is a variety in the cupboard. Bacon sandwich, sausage sandwich, bacon and egg sandwich, hash browns and fried eggs, the list is endless. Bacon is on the mind right now. She picks out the bacon sandwich and the sausage sandwich, time to put them together she thinks. Into the microwave they go and a minute later the smell of bacon and sausage fills the room, her stomach rumbles with excitement.

Ketchup, there has got to be ketchup somewhere, back into the cupboard she goes, the first thing she sees on the left side is a condiment box, with a ton of ketchup. Excellent. She takes three packets and gets cosy in the driver's seat. The green space from the night before has changed, a massive yellow cloud lies in front that looks like it travels on for miles. Giant white stars shine so brightly, a large blue planet lies about a thousand miles over to the left and asteroids float in their own ring over to the right. It looks a relaxing and peaceful scene, breakfast with a view.

After breakfast the girl slips down into the chair, becomes relaxed gazing out onto the wonderous view. It's just so beautiful. It’s only been two days and she keeps thinking of Karen, it is unfortunately a face she can’t forget. The woman that was chasing her for years. The girl wants to forget but she can’t. Yes, she might have broken the law from time to time, and a few more times, but she only did it to feed herself. She had no help growing up, after running away from the home, the law was on her case constantly. She couldn’t bear the thought of prison, there was too many horror stories flying about, so she went on the run.

She was named The Sparrow, the quick and nimble Sparrow, the media made her out as a dangerous villain, her face was plastered in the paper and all over the news, so the girl went into hiding. But the police found her hiding place, so the girl knew what to do from there, find the galaxy centre and fly into space. And she did it, she ran away, more like flew away, and she felt great about it.

Staring into the yellow rift in front of her the girl felt free, as free as a bird. She finally ran away from the law, Karen, and now nothing will stop her. Now she’s ready for adventure, she's ready to start again.
