The Sparrow Saga: The Green Abyss

The escape was brilliant...

By Sara SparrowPublished about a year ago 3 min read

The Sparrow finally made it. From the portal in the galaxy centre, into the big wide universe. Freedom is finally hers. No more evil middle-aged women after her. She took a big breath of fresh air. She felt light, like a giant weight had been lifted off her shoulders. Leaning back in the chair she took in the view in front of her. White shining stars everywhere, planets of all shapes and sizes ahead and a green light surrounding the space. It was serene.

Hunger pains struck her stomach. Hitting the auto pilot button, she got up and went towards the kitchen area. It was a small ship the Sparrow stole, she knew how to navigate the smaller ones, the bigger ones were a no go. A cupboard nearby showed a ton of ready meals which could easily last the year. An easy steal this ship was. The first box she sees is burger and chips. Brilliant, she thinks, just what I need to celebrate. The back of the box has simple steps, place into microwave with the lid off, press number 1 and then meal should be ready. Simple.

She does as the box reads and a minute later, she has a piping hot cheeseburger and chips in front of her. She decides to have a meal with a view. The chips are delicious and salty, the burger is very filling with plenty of cheese on top, a meal in heaven.

Reclining in the chair, still eating, she tries to get rid of all the horrible thoughts swimming through her mind. Karen, the nemesis, her face keeps propping up in the girls brain every few seconds. Nightmarish visions, it’s a hard face to try and forget. She’d been running away from her for at least thirteen years, kept meeting up with her every three months. But now, sitting in a reclined chair devouring burger and chips, she would never see Karen again, the Sparrow knows she can’t get into space.

Well, she hopes not anyway. Karen and her clan never really knew how to manoeuvre aircraft anyway, so it seemed unlikely. The Sparrow lets out a loud belch after wolfing down her meal, she now feels rested and calm, for once in her life. Mini asteroids flew by the ship every so often, the Sparrow would flinch, but they were no real threat, they kept missing the ship every time. She was now engrossed in a mass green space, it was a beautiful scene the girl was awed by, she couldn’t take her eyes off the view.

The sweet tooth was slowly kicking in. Off to the cupboard she went. She opened all the drawer's finding all sorts, bottles of water, alcohol, chocolate and plenty of sweets. Galaxy chocolate it was, for plenty of reasons right now, she took two bars back to the seat. Chomping on chocolate she watched as asteroids flew by, stars glowed in the black sky and the different planets glowed in the far-off distance. It was like something out of a sci-fi movie. But real.

Tiredness was slowly kicking in. Her watch read 11.50PM. Time to go to bed. She makes sure the ship is in auto pilot mode before leaving the seat. She heads into the back room where the bed is, a very small room, a single bed, box underneath it to keep clothes in and a bedside table with a lamp on it. She should probably shower as she hasn’t in days, she’ll do it in the morning instead. The only thing on her mind at the minute is sleep.

She crawls into the bed; a lovely soft warm mattress welcomes her well. As soon as her head hits the pillow, she finds herself zoning quickly into a dark green abyss into the back of her mind with Karens face flashing every two seconds.
