With inner silence he rejoices in the misery and pain of others. Outwardly, empathy oozes from him like slug slime.

Last night's fire in the low-income housing block, and yesterday’s mass shooting was damn near orgasmic.

Glancing to his right, thoughts of piercing a dagger into the woman's heart thrills the shit out of him. He shoots her a smile instead.

He glares, as a man points a finger at him and mouths the words …three…two…one.

With a practiced solemn pseudo grin, he begins.

“Good evening, and welcome to the six o’clock news. Four dead as tragedy struck….”

Jason this was phenomenal!! It was bone chilling and mind bending, I wasn't ready for the twist at the end, great work!

    Great story especially the title!

Nice story! After writing a very dark story myself this week, now feel comforted that it might fit in here lol. And your first paragraph sings narcissistic personality disorder. I've known a few journalists, pleasant calm rational people, that hope for epic chaos tomorrow in order to win their pulitzers. The irony!.

  • Should I be worried because I resonated with him? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Awesome story! Congratulations on your Top Story!

Ahh Jason, ya got me with that one, my son. Nice work and a well deserved TS! As a P.S., I hate to admit this, but lately, I find myself tuning in to the early Monday morning cable news to catch the latest tally from the previous weekend's incidents. Sad,eh?

  • Mackenzie Davisabout a year ago

Very well crafted micro piece! I had to go back to get the full impact—a sign that it has great subtext. The image was a good red herring and hook, got to the core feeling immediately, and established a satisfying twist. Congrats! It was a fun read.
