The concrete seemed to glimmer in the sun, Tori was reminded of home. The way the streets were beaten by the elements cracking under winter’s pressure made potholes everywhere. It was also odd because of the glimmering specks in the street Tori once thought were jewels, she now realized they were fragments of glass.

The first day of any school year was always nerve racking. The first day of class at college was doubly so. The first day of class at a new college in a strange city where you have only met two people--was creepy. Tori did what she could to make it through. Before she left home she printed out the map of the campus, circled the buildings where her classes were along with the times and room numbers.

When Dell pulled into the driveway with the van, Tori rolled her eyes and wondered if he was going to rent a new vehicle every time they went somewhere. She pulled her cell phone out of her pocket and rolled her eyes again. Tony had not texted her.

The average beach visitor dreads the daunting task of finding reasonable parking. Every lot that didn’t cost an arm and a leg would be anywhere from five to ten blocks away from the beach. From the few trips the crew took down to the beach as children, they all remembered that. They remembered assisting with carrying bags, coolers, towels, and sometimes chairs and umbrellas. They would look like a makeshift parade heading to the boardwalk. The whole family would stop and catch their breaths at the steps leading up to that wonderful wooden barrier from the beach hosting vendors, games, rides, food stands, and a variety of other little hidden treasures.

After the eating, the dancing, the water ice, the fireworks… Tori was still trippin that there were fireworks. After the yards were cleaned up, the food was put away, the left over coolers filled with all kinds of drinks placed on their respective porches, Tori and her crew were lying on lawn chairs inside one of the zippered up canopies in Trudy’s backyard. The breeze was cool but not uncomfortable. Tori could still hear jazz softly playin from down the street. It was soothing like the tinkling of a myriad of backyard wind chimes. Even the guys seemed to enjoy it.

The healing process was an arduous haze for the quartet. Dell was able to bind and gag his inner demons, pass his G.E.D. exam and enroll for fall classes. Malik graduated and although he never told a soul that it made him physically ill, he worked hard at the construction site with Dennis. Tony on the hand, refused to work at the construction site; unbeknownst to anyone, he enlisted in the Army and was due to leave for basic training in the middle of September.

Mann entered the house first. He actually let out a small chuckle because all three bodies had one bullet hole in the back of their heads. There were two in the kitchen and one in the dining room. He nudged Sticks, “I guess he was the one who almost got away. Ol’ girl shoots like her Daddy.” Sticks turned and glared at Mann but then realized there was no need because Tony didn’t hear anything. He just stood there in disbelief.
