Tori almost didn’t hear the light rapping on her door. She rolled over to check Ladee’s bed, but as usual it was empty. Ladee was a different girl than she was at the beginning of the semester. At first Tori was worried, but then she saw Ladee on campus all gothic with blue-black hair and dramatic make-up. She almost didn’t recognize her.

Tony snapped to attention and damn near saluted Detective Farrell when he walked into the office. Farrell chuckled slightly as he motioned for him to sit down. He didn’t waste any time explaining the situation at hand. Tony listened intently. Once his options were put in front of him, he realized he didn’t have much of a choice. The way he looked at it he had no one. Gram was gone. None of his boys contacted him about her being sick. Not one of them. Tori left. She is probably doing her. Or someone else. Tori was able to stay focused enough to complete her pieces, and that pleased her. It also pleased Professor Holmes, who now had a knack for just popping up in the studio and scaring the shit out of her. So the final time he scared her, Professor Holmes, looked at her skeptically and proceeded asking Tori questions as he looked over her work.

With every bump in the road, he winced. In his mind he was cussin out the Burger King he devoured before he got on the bus to head home. Number one, he knew better. Fast food was a convenience not a direct order. He had no idea why he ate it so quickly. The only rational explanation for inhaling it the way he did was that after weeks of bland chow, that burger was like a steak to him. Unfortunately, he forgot what a number it would do on his stomach. The first six hours, he ignored the rumbling sound and did his best to process what was happening.

Tori hid in the library gathering books for her research paper. She began writing and highlighting on notecards. It was a productive and much needed distraction for the day. It was also an easy and believable excuse to avoid Michael. By the time he was out of class, she could sneak back into the studio to work on her projects. She was excited as well as shocked that Professor Holmes liked her mixed media piece, but she felt uneasy putting her pain on display. Then she reconciled that’s what most artists do.
