“Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space... or so they say,” the hologram echoed. The hue of the digi-board’s synthetic lights electrified the miner’s byway, silhouetting the rush-hour crowd. McParlane turned away from the advertisement and limped down the tunnel street.

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. I rather feel like I hear screams too often while looking at the vastness of the stars above me. Inhaling the salty air as I stand just close enough to the ocean for the water to roll over my feet, I ignore the subtle hues of different colored lights coming from me. Almost in a trance, I stand perfectly still as I await something I’m not a hundred percent certain of as a memory rises.

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. What they don’t say, is that the vacuum of space is a void. A void that eats away at almost every sense. Theruvé learned this within just a month of being in the void. Taste is something you no longer need as a slow release NutrIV injection sustains you for centuries. Touch is something no longer experienced. At the beginning you might feel cold, but even that yields to numbness. Smell, much like touch, slowly gives way to nothing. Hearing? Well, what use is it in the silence of the void? The only sense that must be retained and protected at all costs, is sight. Theruvé was a Shomrim, a sentry of the outer rim, a silent sentinel at the edge of the universe, the first defense from whatever lay beyond The End.

“Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. However, recent advancements in the field of physics suggest that given the adequate amount of matter present in the vacuum, one might indeed be able to pick up—”

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. What they don't tell you, is just how deafeningly, oppressively silent the vacuum of space really is.

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. They also said no one would go to space, but the day the first man went up was a victory for the human race.

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. I am here to tell you that I believe you can. Well, some of us can. It’s all a bit complicated, and I am still sorting through the details. The “details”?? Hmmm… maybe the answer is in the details. What are the details, I wondered? And then I realized I can’t remember… ANYTHING. Not only are details fuzzy, but everything is fuzzy.

Present Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. Io can still hear Axium's in her internal comms unit, and his screaming sobs were all she could hear from their last exchange. She has a record of all NCOMMs between Axium and her, from back to the FISU(Forward Inter Solar Unit) academy. He was in her first Ceribal Hacking Ethics course, and they became best friends instantly. Axium was kicked out of lectures on more than one occasion for pushing back on some of the professors' statements. He was the most harmonious source of contrast in her life.

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. The bar of the cry is low that the passing breeze gets a tickling sensation and feels the shyness.

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. I’m about to find out if that old adage is true.

“Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say.” The pleasant female voice paused for a moment in consideration. “However, that doesn’t mean the scream never existed.” As the words flowed through my brain, they began to distort into a shriek of agony that shook the essence of who I was like a dog with a live wire. Tastes, sounds, and colors all combined into an eternal screech of agony; one I was unable to return. All I could sense was the unending torment of the scream.

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. The void simply swallows the noise while death swiftly follows. Though it is curious to imagine what sort of creature would be able to scream in that vast emptiness. The answer to that question is quite simple; those that can breathe can scream. Perhaps this next part is best put as a riddle: what swallows all light and noise?
