Out of Season
It looked like a nice day outside, through my window. Eleven years old and trapped in bed all summer. I’m not well. But I’ll get better. That’s what Mum and Dad keep saying. I can’t see anything through my window but the clouds slowly passing by. They keep on bringing me more books to read. But I’m bored of books. I think they can tell. I used to love books.

Storage Shed
You go to the shed for a table leaf. That’s it. That’s the entire mission. A simple retrieval operation. A three‑minute task. Something so basic it doesn’t even qualify as a chore. You’ve survived gate guard at 0300, CQ shifts that felt like psychological warfare, and the kind of family chaos that should earn hazard pay. A shed should not be a threat.

A Supervisor of Renown
Martha, Salutations! I appreciate working for someone so detailed and specific. We knew that our work would get a comprehensive, fine-toothed-comb review, noting excellence and marking areas for improvement. You were my supervisor for an eventful ten years, so please know that I realize your insight was better than mine when it came to annual leave requests. Your life after retirement will be filled with adventures of your own making. Congratulations on a well-deserved retirement.
