Love
MAKE DO AND MEND - A NOVEL
I could say that this is the story of how I died, although that wouldn’t necessarily be true. As with anything in life, and death is no different, there is so much more to this tale than just my death. Although, that is certainly the beginning.

Dangerous Spiders
1. The first thing I notice as Amy Quills leads me to her giant house is the benevolence, like welcoming me to another world, here in this galaxy of crystal mirror windows, glass lamps of stars, splendid sculptures, and plutocratic architecture. She shies away from me, "Oh it's not that big a deal!" Oh, but it is, Amy. It's like nothing I have come to expect. A modern castle—some sort of secret cult, I know, is lurking past those iron-wrought gates, past the hedges of thick and untrustworthy greenery. The forest feels like it is closing in, but she just leads me on. Up the marble stairs, the command of the doorbell. A radiant chime, lasting longer than usual. "I should have worn a suit," I say. She gives me a sharp look, rolling her eyes.

Mud Baths
The heat ate their bodies slowly, between trees and swamps, as mosquitoes converged in the sticky wrap of the oxygen. They looked upon the dead waters, hoping something more would become of their lives. Lisa and John always shared the same cigarettes, the same bottles of alcohol, daydreaming and distending. Nothing was accomplished. The cicadas screamed their ephemeral cries, like some sort of unique haunting above them. Sometimes Lisa and John would read down by the river. Languid pages blinked in the dry wind. Or they would just look at one another, in silent language.

The Pigerons
I hear someone screaming in the distance and I open my eyes. It’s dark and I can’t remember where I am so I try to move but I can’t, my body is unresponsive but my mind is racing. I hear footsteps approaching and my fear makes my heart beat faster, something touches my foot, I can’t tell what but the coldness I feel doesn’t leave my body, and shivers run through my spine. Seconds later I see a face leaning in close but I can’t make out the features and suddenly it disappears as someone screams my name. Or am I imagining it? I don’t know anymore. I'm disoriented and trying to stay calm when I finally get my mobility back.

Tani's Torment
Tani sat with her back against the rough bark of the giant weeping willow, their special tree. She leaned her head back and stared up at the graceful branches filled with thousands of tiny green leaves; they reached down from the heavens like a protective covering. Tears flowed down her cheeks, like the stream nearby that meandered its way from the distant hills to meet a bigger river. This was not how she envisioned spending their anniversary; yet, here she was desperately missing Andy, hoping to draw some strength and peace from this tree. The tree where they would sit for hours holding hands and sharing secrets, where he asked for her hand in marriage.

The Day After
I stare at my bed side clock flashing the familiar 04:00 at me. For the first time in several decades it isn't accompanied by the mind numbing beep I've become accustomed to waking to. I guess I didn't really need the alarm the last decade or so but habit had me set it every night before bed. A pang of loss sounds its way through my chest. I turn over with a heavy sigh.

Where is love?
In this world I never have had love. I' ve searched a lot, inside people who laughed by their heart, inside people whose laughter was sad. Inside men who used to say "I love you" without even meaning it and to those they didn't know what love really meant for me.

Peachy . Top Story - June 2021.
In her complexion there lay a latent rouge which would emerge if she had been running for the train, or he told her she was pretty. In truth, she was very pretty, but she moved slowly and with the languor of a young teenage boy. All her elegance was in her face. Her eyes and brows were dark, and clashed broodingly with an otherwise pale disposition. Her Cupid’s Bow rose aggressively, but with a certain symphonic grace that moved around the rest of her face like a swirling wind. She had it in her to bite with a single look. On other days though, usually when the sun had brought out her freckles and kissed her skin, she would let down her guard and a downy innocence would bashfully emerge, like a peach. He often told her as much, immediately after having paid her some compliment deliberately devised to illuminate her cheeks. ‘Like a peach, that’s soft and sweet the whole way through – no stone’ he would say.
