Roll Them Bones
Willy is a character from a couple of other short stories I've written. He's a modern day "hedge wizard". For you non-uber nerds, that's a self taught wizard who can perform basic spells, brew potions, and make scrolls. He lives in modern-day New Orleans and uses his abilities and most of all his tendency to be more lucky than prepared to help people. He's not quite a private detective like Harry Dresden. That would require a level of study and dedication he's not always capable of. But he has a good heart.

New World
My feet hit the dirt trail hard, and I pitched forward down the slope, careening wildly through the trees. By the time I regained my balance, I had to scoot back from the edge of the cliff, crouching against the mountainside to catch my breath. A wide valley stretched out before me, the bottom covered by a shining lake.

True Story
It was not aliens. I know saying that first does me no favours. But once a man says aliens, the story is over. People stop listening to the parts that are true. They stop asking what season it was, what the house smelled like, what the dog did, whether the porch light was on, whether there was a June bug dead in the glass or still alive, knocking itself stupid against the bulb.
