In the city of Noctis, the sun never truly shined.

Thick gray clouds covered the sky every day, and the streets were lit by floating lanterns that glowed with pale blue fire. People hurried through the markets with their heads down, speaking quietly as if afraid the darkness itself was listening.

But the strangest thing about Noctis was not the endless clouds.

It was the missing shadows.

One by one, people across the city began losing them.

At first, nobody noticed. A baker opened his shop without a shadow behind him. Then a teacher lost hers. Soon, entire crowds walked through the streets without darkness following their feet.

And when a person lost their shadow, something else disappeared too.

Their emotions.

They no longer laughed, cried, or dreamed. They simply existed like empty shells.

Deep beneath the city, hidden under abandoned tunnels, lived a seventeen-year-old orphan named Kael. Unlike everyone else, Kael had a dangerous secret:

He could see lost shadows.

They moved across walls like living smoke, whispering in strange voices at night.

Since childhood, Kael survived by capturing wandering shadows inside magical glass bottles and selling them to collectors in the black market. Most people feared shadows, believing they carried curses from another world.

But Kael knew the truth.

Shadows were not evil.

They were pieces of the human soul.

One rainy evening, Kael was walking through the old underground station when he heard crying echoing through the darkness.

At the end of the tunnel stood a little girl no older than eight years old.

She had no shadow.

“Please,” she whispered. “Help me find it.”

Kael knelt beside her carefully.

“What happened?”

The girl pointed toward the tallest building in Noctis—the massive black tower known as the Obsidian Palace.

“The Shadow King took it.”

Kael froze.

Every child in Noctis grew up hearing stories about the Shadow King, a mysterious ruler who supposedly lived beneath the palace and fed on human emotions to become immortal.

Most people believed he was only a legend.

But Kael knew legends often hid the truth.

That same night, he decided to enter the palace.

Using hidden tunnels beneath the city, Kael slipped past iron gates and climbed deep into the forbidden chambers below the tower. Strange black crystals covered the walls, glowing faintly like trapped stars.

Then he discovered something horrifying.

Thousands of shadows floated inside giant glass containers hanging from the ceiling.

The missing shadows of Noctis.

A cold voice echoed through the chamber.

“You should not be here.”

A tall figure emerged from the darkness wearing a cloak made entirely of moving shadows. His eyes glowed silver like moonlight.

The Shadow King.

“You steal shadows,” Kael said angrily. “People are suffering because of you.”

The king smiled sadly.

“They abandoned their emotions long before I took them.”

With a wave of his hand, the shadows inside the room began twisting violently around Kael like black storms.

“Humans fear pain,” the king continued. “Without sadness, there is no suffering. Without fear, there is peace.”

Kael remembered the empty faces in the streets above.

“That’s not peace,” he said quietly. “That’s emptiness.”

The Shadow King’s silver eyes narrowed.

“You speak like someone who still believes hope matters.”

Kael reached into his coat and pulled out dozens of glass bottles containing lost shadows he had collected for years.

“I do.”

One by one, he smashed the bottles against the floor.

Darkness exploded across the chamber as hundreds of shadows escaped into the air like birds finally freed from cages. They rushed upward through cracks in the ceiling toward the city above.

Outside, the people of Noctis suddenly stopped walking.

For the first time in years, they felt emotions returning.

Some began crying without understanding why.

Others laughed.

Parents hugged their children.

Music echoed once again through forgotten streets.

Inside the palace, the Shadow King stared silently as the chamber emptied.

Then, slowly, his dark cloak began disappearing.

Kael looked at him in confusion.

“What’s happening to you?”

The king smiled faintly.

“I was the first man to lose his shadow.”

Without the stolen shadows to sustain him, his body dissolved into black smoke that vanished into the air forever.

As dawn finally broke through the clouds above Noctis, sunlight touched the city for the first time in generations.

And behind every person standing in the golden streets…

their shadows had returned.
