Far beyond the oceans, above clouds that sparkled like diamonds, there was a floating kingdom called Aerwyn. The kingdom drifted across the sky on giant islands held together by ancient magic. People traveled between the islands using flying ships with silver sails, and glowing birds carried messages from city to city.
But Aerwyn had one secret.
Hidden deep inside the Crystal Mountains lived the last dragon in existence.
Its name was Zephyros.
For centuries, dragons had protected the balance of the skies. Their magic controlled the winds, storms, and stars above the world. But humans grew afraid of their power and hunted them until none remained.
Or so everyone believed.
Only the royal family knew the truth.
Every full moon, the king secretly climbed the Crystal Mountains to feed the dragon glowing moonstones that kept its magic alive. In return, Zephyros protected Aerwyn from falling out of the sky.
One winter night, disaster struck.
A dark storm appeared from the northern horizon. Black lightning tore through the clouds, destroying bridges between islands. Flying ships crashed into the endless mist below.
Inside the royal palace, panic spread quickly.
“The islands are losing balance!” shouted the royal astronomer. “The wind currents are collapsing!”
King Rowan looked toward the mountains with fear in his eyes.
“The dragon is weakening.”
At that moment, a young palace servant named Elian overheard everything.
Elian was only seventeen years old. He cleaned the palace libraries and spent most of his time reading forbidden stories about dragons, lost magic, and forgotten kingdoms. Unlike others, he never feared dragons. He admired them.
That same night, Elian made a dangerous decision.
He stole a small flying glider and flew toward the Crystal Mountains alone.
The storm followed him across the sky.
Winds screamed around him like angry spirits. Ice formed on the wings of the glider, and thunder shook the heavens. Several times he nearly fell into the darkness below.
After hours of fighting the storm, Elian finally reached the hidden cave of Zephyros.
The dragon was enormous.
Its silver scales reflected blue light across the cave walls. Crystal horns curved backward from its head like frozen lightning. But despite its beauty, the dragon looked weak. Its breathing was slow, and cracks of dark energy spread across its scales.
Huge glowing chains surrounded the creature.
Elian stared in shock.
The dragon was imprisoned.
A voice suddenly echoed behind him.
“You should not have come here.”
An old woman stepped from the shadows wearing a cloak covered in star symbols. She was Seraphine, the kingdom’s forgotten sorceress.
“The king chained the dragon long ago,” she explained sadly. “He feared its power. Without freedom, Zephyros cannot heal the skies anymore.”
Elian looked at the exhausted dragon.
“Then we have to free him.”
Seraphine shook her head.
“The chains are forged with royal magic. Breaking them could destroy the kingdom.”
Another explosion thundered outside the cave. One of the floating islands cracked apart in the distance.
Elian clenched his fists.
“If we do nothing, the kingdom will fall anyway.”
The dragon slowly opened its glowing silver eyes and looked directly at him.
For one strange moment, Elian heard a voice inside his mind.
Do you trust me, human?
Elian swallowed his fear.
“Yes.”
The dragon’s eyes softened.
Seraphine handed Elian an ancient crystal dagger.
“Only someone with courage, not royal blood, can break the final seal.”
Elian walked toward the glowing chains. The closer he came, the stronger the storm outside became. Winds howled through the cave entrance.
With all his strength, he raised the dagger and struck the largest chain.
CRACK!
Light exploded across the mountains.
One by one, the magical chains shattered into dust.
Zephyros rose with a roar so powerful it shook the heavens.
The dragon spread its enormous wings, brighter than moonlight itself, and soared into the storm.
Above Aerwyn, people watched in amazement as silver fire filled the skies.
Zephyros flew through the black clouds, tearing apart the darkness with beams of crystal light. The storm screamed and twisted before finally disappearing beyond the horizon.
Slowly, calm winds returned.
The floating islands stabilized once more.
When dawn arrived, the people of Aerwyn gathered silently as the dragon circled above the kingdom one final time.
Then Zephyros disappeared into the endless golden clouds.
Some believed the dragon had returned to the stars.
Others believed it still watched over the kingdom from beyond the sky.
But from that day forward, the people of Aerwyn no longer feared dragons.
Instead, they remembered them as guardians of hope, freedom, and the endless sky.
