Gnomes - book review
Gnomes By Wil Huygen, Rien Poortvliet (illustrator) Book review- no spoilers 1976 - Holland, 1977 – USA 212 Pages From the limited contact I have had with folks from previous generations, it is clear this book has made the rounds. I understand it adorned many a tabletop since its inception in the 1970s. How different my life would have been had I discovered this book at a young age. Then again, perhaps I did, and this experience is a reopening of past chapters... I digress.

Silent Knight
It was late. I should have been asleep, but I had a secret duty to attend to. Phillipe had been limping each night as we stopped to rest. He was a magnificent horse; strong, tall, and swift, and he served as steed to Mikhail, the knight I squired for. Mikhail loved that horse, and so I did all that I could to keep him healthy. I outfitted him with different shoes, I made sure he had a healthy diet, and I even took to carrying some of the saddlebags as we marched. But when all that started to fail, I used magic.

Dystopian Gods of Amara
Asherah was still sitting in her palace room surrounded with emptiness and memories of times gone by. She fiddled with the necklace around her neck – her birth right and felt the power surging around her hands. She remembered the good old days of when she, Yam and El first met, and how they had saved the universe. The first war.... Her reverie broken; a booming knock came to the door.

The Story of Helel (Chapters 1&2)
1. A MEADOW OF WILLOWS There was nothing, and then there was everything. An intelligent being, born not as an infant nor as one wise with age, opened his eyes for the first time. His senses tingled with curiosity as the world introduced itself. The new sounds graced him in passing. The sensations were glorious; a rush, if you will.

The Stars In Her Eyes
She stared at the stars above her, relishing in the feeling of gentle winds and the sounds of soft crickets. She named all the constellations one by one. The Twins. The Branches of Virtue stretching across the Arms of the Lovers. Sync had often wondered about the lovers in the sky. How they could always found each other in their infinite lives, even though their love was forbidden and they were separated time after time. When Sync first heard it, she laughed. What a silly story, in all the world how were they able to find each other? It seemed impossible and subject to belief. At least that’s what she was told back when she was a servant--a slave. There was a time where she believed such things, but since her first shift in her life, Sync Roastleaf wasn’t quite sure what she believed.

King Alvin (Chapter 1)
1. CAREER CHANGE My past isn’t all that impressive. I lived in a small, one bedroom stone hut with my mother on the outskirts of a small town called Highland, several miles away from the giant port city: Mai. Let’s just say that I was a dreamer; I was absolutely certain that there was some great destiny for me to fulfill; perhaps as a noble knight, or even a mysterious scholar. My mother often took me to the library where I would study all sorts of maps and the history of every single kingdom to ever exist. When I was thirteen, I traveled alone to Mai and began my knight apprenticeship under Sir Rochel: a difficult man.

Defiance
Ali gazed over the tree line as darkness faded into the glow on the horizon. The twin moons lost luster before the rising sun. Brief wisps of fog dispersed, revealing the valley below. Her sharp vision searched for motion, found none. She sniffed the air for signs of life, residue of wood smoke mingling with varied scents of the forest. And was that…? Yes. Delicate yet irrepressible, just strong enough to trace. She could almost taste the fresh bread cooling below. With a warm, cheerful grin, she began her descent down the rough mountain path.

Defiance
Gault’s eyes were closed, dark hair wreathing his pale skin, clinging in strings to his cheeks and forehead. His chest rose and fell with ragged unevenness, breath harsh gasps. His face appeared gaunt, cheeks and eyes sunken. Ali felt the fist of ice tighten one last time.
