Thrice Three
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Despite the legends, the dragons arrived after the hominids within hours of the same day. From the entrance to our cave halfway up the Mountain, my sisters and I saw the woman and her mate arrive. They entered from the western boundary, where the hills had recently, recently in Baba Yaga time, recently in geological time, pushed up out of the original vastness of the Plain, forming the Valley.

The Augur Knight
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. In fact, there weren’t always serpents. But one morning in the cold dew, a one-eyed farmer glanced sideways at a crooked branch and thought he saw a viper. He told of it in the tavern that night, and sure enough, by the next morning, the valley’s crannies were squirming with snakes.

Vanguard
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Not always, but clearly now. And not just a handful; an entire flight seemed to have settled, coming down from their usual lairs in the mountains to the north. Against all expectations, there they were – lying in the sun, though they would be quick to rouse if they were disturbed.

Drakes of the North
There weren’t always dragons in the valley… My father seldom spoke of it, but I know he was among the few to have survived their arrival in our lands. He was their at the fall of North Watch, the Fraendi Mannskadi, as we call it. The Kinsman-Great-Loss, in the primary southern translation. He was also there at the Torrlegge Mannhringr, the reclamation of the Greater Realm’s Capital. There was a dragon there they say, albeit a small one. My father fought alongside the legendary Five Champions then. He was one of them, though they themselves were not yet truly champions until later.

The Piper of Vallier
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. They arrived with the conquerors, those invaders from across the sea who had laid siege to our lands for the last three years. Little of the ensuing war had touched us here, protected by our mountain passes, except for the bloody influx of dragons.
