Unexplainable Questions
There weren’t always dragons in this Valley. Alysen looked around almost concerned. They appeared as if they were at peace, they weren’t going to attack anytime soon. Alysen and her best friend, yet older brother Rylan Hammond hiked here at least once a week, so how long had the dragons been here? Metaphorically speaking Dragons didn’t exist, they were a part of fairy tales, they were mythology. Alyson spun her head around looking for Rylan. He was 3 years older and he wasn’t supposed to leave her alone on their hiking trips, if there parents had found out, they would no longer be allowed to go on them.

Dusk Town
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. Duskal is a town built by people, and for people as my father always says. My great, great grandfather founded this town, and every generation after him spent their lives surrounded by what we call the Burning Mountains which glow orange with the heat of the sun. I roll over in my bed and look out my window the same way I do every morning. The Burning Mountains almost completely circle the valley; they aren’t really mountains though. Just rising mounds of sandstone that we call Clockstone, a mineral that changes colour with the energy around it. Since Duskal is always hot, Clockstone is usually glowing orange like the sands of the desert. But one time I saw one of the mountains get hit with lightening in a storm, and it was glowing bright blue all night. These rocks keep all of the heat swirling around, like Duskal is a vegetable inside a bowl of Kickling broth Mom used to make that boils everything perfectly. The sun has started peeking through the cracks in the mountains, turning the clouds bright orange and red. The day will only get hotter from here. I’d love to just sleep in since I’m not working at the quarry today, but I promised Aiken I’d help at the ranch and there’s no time like the present. I keep looking to the clouds over the desert as I start getting up, when suddenly a large creature makes its way through them and begins its descent towards the town, flapping its huge wings and kicking up a storm of sand. Dragons. I rush to the window and stick my head out to get a better look as it lands before the entrance to the town and releases a large package that it had held in its claws. This dragon’s neck reaches above the highest building in town, and we’re using it to deliver packages. I’ve always wondered why dragons only just started coming to Duskal. The desert isn’t much of a place for humans, but it seemed perfect for dragons. You have to wonder what it says about my great grandpa if he’ll build a town in a place where even dragons won’t choose to go.

I Swear I Saw a Dragon
There weren't always dragons in this valley. That's what the humans used to say anyway. What they didn't know was that we have always been amongst them, living and coping like humans. We watched as the humans destroyed the world for an upper hand and a better life.

The Unraveling World
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. Nor were there fanged serpents in the rivers. Nor packs of wolf-lizards on the plains, nor thunderbirds in the air. The forests weren’t always populated by vampire trees and razor squirrels. The towns and villages weren’t always heavily fortified, the people weren’t always constantly afraid. And the fields weren’t always so barren.

Fire Upon the Sand
The sun blazed brightly over the desert sand, a burning white hole in the broad azure sky. The day was a cloudless one, and shimmering waves of heat played upon the sand, seeming to make the air dance in odd little ripples. Nuresh Prasaad straightened his back and wiped the sweat from his heavy brow with the back of one broad hand. The cloth folds of his turban helped to shield his dark eyes from the harsh glare of the sun. He took a small sip of water from the skin at his belt, felt the cooling pleasure of it sliding down his throat. Glancing upward, he noticed a dark shape in the sky high above him, turning lazy circles around the sun. A vulture. He watched the bird for a moment before returning to his work. Bending at the waist, he gripped the rough sides of a large clay jug and lifted it. A bead of sweat trickled down the middle of his back as he set the empty earthenware on the flat stone edge of the well. He used a rope and pulley to draw up a bucket of fresh water and tipped it into the clay jug. Once it was full, he lowered the bucket back into the well and carried the jug to his cart, which contained several other jugs now filled with spring water. Then he moved on to the next.

Dragons Hunt in the Valley
Chapter 1 The First Foal Julia Wenger 6 June 2022 There weren't always dragons in the Valley. The night wasn't always eternal. Our Valley was peaceful and alive beneath the shimmering light of the Sun. The stars used to sparkle and shine upon the water. My herd didn't always worship the dead Moon. The Moon and her children used to shine in the constellations by the millions. Our horns were blessed with the light of her children. We were her favorite on the Earth, and our bodies glowed in her soft light. My people were glorious. It was said that the Valley would be in bloom for as long as our people lived here and that we should live in the Moon's light for eternity. We thought we could never see eternity end, believing the word to mean a measurement of time unending. But eternity, as it came to be known, always meant what is to come. Eternity has come. It is darkness. The Valley is haunted, and dragons hunt us. Eternity is our extinction.
