Valley of Accidentals

The Ordinaries

There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Opius was planning for the Sky Warriors to drink an elixir of Dragon’s blood concocted by Morgan Lister that night at Astrid’s Diner. Larnus selected Morgan due to her meticulous attention to detail along with her exceptional skills in potion preparations. There was a call, a threat, that threw her off.

The wireless phones rang and rang while Morgan discreetly retreated to her office away from the kitchen. She set the vile of excavated remains on her desk next to a pitcher full of lemonade. She removed the cap delicately pouring each drop into the pitcher as she chanted, “backs grow wings,” a drop, “bodies with bones stronger than stones,” a drop, “gleaming scales, claws sharper than nails,” drop, “long tails that whip, fire that spits,” as the last drop fell into the now orange liquid she proclaimed, “human by day and dragon by night; everlasting life!” The room filled with smoke pouring out as she rushed to the counter to spot the teal blazer and sweatpants worn by the Sky. A waitress hastily handed her the phone, breathlessly stating, “you're going to want to hear this!”

Valerie sat in a booth waiting for her wife who went to the bathroom. The music was blaring old time rock n’ roll. Smoke rolled out of the kitchen into the seating area as if a fog machine was on in the kitchen. A waitress returned her credit card and topped off her orange juice, telling her they were about to close up. Valerie drank her glass impatiently, as her mouth puckered up with every sip. She constantly looked to the bathroom hall to see if her wife was done. She kept noticing the staff staring at her and the other guests, then whispering.

A waitress walked up to the table filled with people in teal uniforms and informed them Morgan would be right over. As their gaze followed her away from their table they saw Morgan in shock as she dropped the phone. Valerie was on the floor convulsing and shaking violently. Curled up in a ball, she screamed in agony, her back bleeding as fresh wings prodded through the flesh on her back spanning outward. Tables toppled, windows broken, and the roof bursted open falling in on itself as her body grew massively in seconds. Her skin stretched into shiny hues of green, red, black, and yellow. Shrieks filled the diner as her bones lengthened and awkwardly found their shape. Within minutes she was looking down from the ceiling at other guests starting to drop to the floor. Claws scratching at the ground unable to find balance. The length of her spine reached the street. She whipped it back and forth shattering windows along with the jukebox. Terrified and panicked, she squirmed around to find an exit from the nightmare.

Fig, a Sky Warrior, called out to Brock as he threw a rope. They worked together lassoing each shimmering beast to the ground harnessing them tight. Valerie saw Lillian coming out the hall. Before she could tell her to watch out, Brock swung a rope around her mouth calling out for the team to hurry up and tie their mouths shut to avoid a fireball incident. Black blood from the dragons fighting the restraints covered the booths, the walls, the ceiling, the counters, and everyone in the Diner. Fig was yelling at Morgan about her negligence, but she was going on and on about how the Torries have kidnapped Lance-her father.

Within moments a backup fleet of Sky Warriors appeared with guns and shot each dragon with a tranquilizer. They took the dragons to the Valley and ever since it has been called the Valley of accidentals. Ordinaries that have accidentally been forever transformed into dragons. These dragons in the Valley are being trained by the Sky Warriors to protect the Obius from the threat of Torries on the order of magic.
