How NOT to Catch a Leprechaun
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Just like there’d once been vampires in the alleys, a living wage made in only forty hours a week. A god in heaven and a chicken roasting in every hearth. Once, but not always. Dragons were the last exhalation of belief, leaving this world. And the cough that came afterwards, the little scrap of upside-down breath that hiccupped when you thought you were plumb out…well that was Barry.

Monster Hunter Challenge
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. But then, there weren't always trolls under the bridges, or goblins in the swamps, or zombies in the desert. There weren't always sorcerers or barbarians, monster hunters who would track them down, take their heads and then claim them for a fee.

Weird Tales of Dragon Valley, Oregon
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. Morgan would know considering he grew up there. You see Dragons, Drakes, Wyrms, and Wyverns were a relatively new feature in his home town of Heck, Oregon, and a quite odd one as well. It had just been his luck that he had been one of the first ones to see them.

Aftermath
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. There weren’t always fires eating away at the mountainsides, the cracking of trees that burned to husks echoing in the frigid night air. Like joints popping, as if the earth were curling her fingers to claw at the rash of flames that glowed brutal and hot along the ridgelines.

Valley of Fire
There weren't always dragons in the valley. The legends say that they were around long ago. It wasn't uncommon to see them there, in their nests under the trees or in the mountains. Dragons were the most powerful creatures on the planet. They could take out an entire village in minutes. Theirs was a species capable of conquering many lands. And their numbers grew rapidly. It was hard to tell how many there really were. One hundred? Two? Perhaps a hundred and fifty? The people of the Valley of Fire had never been able to get a clear count. The people believed they would cause great destruction. They believed the dragons had become a problem.

Chapter 1
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Cora, fortunately, lived when there were. Her hair whipped into tangles around her face as she and Alec circled the mountain peaks around their home. They soared over the valley below, watching as chimney smoke puffed higher and small shadows of people emerged to feed the livestock or gather water from wells. They didn’t have much time before the dragon handlers would notice Taudra and Eykil missing, but the promise of a clear morning and the thrill of doing something they shouldn’t had distracted Cora from her nerves.

Heir of Agartha
HEIR OF AGARTHA -1- There weren’t always dragons in the valley. In the grand scheme of things, Alex Taylor mused, the arrival of the two eldritch winged serpents that had taken up residence deep inside these San Bernardino mountains during the last Ice Age, in long-forgotten cave systems and passages tunneling to the Earth’s core, was a rather recent event.

THE SIDRA'S SONG
“There weren’t always dragons in the valley”, the Asha projected her voice to the listeners gathered. “When I was born there were no dragons or their Sidras. Magic was the stuff of legend”, she imparted sagely. This was a sobering thought. Magic, Sidras and their dragon familiars were essential to the health, wealth, and safety of their nation. Only a few here were alive to witness a reality without them.

The Fire and The Flood
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. In fact, until quite recently, there weren’t any dragons at all, anywhere. They weren’t entirely unknown, of course; while the Valley willfully remained a stagnant intellectual backwater in comparison with the rest of the world, not everyone that lived in the shadow of the mountains was so ignorant as to have not heard of them, even if the notion was a bit beyond the strict edge of their imaginations. Before, there was no need for dragons or other flights of fancy to feed into the mill of muddy thoughts that ground through most of their heads on a daily basis; there was hardly enough room up there between the everyday worries about the mounting stacks of bills, the mines closing up, and recession looming on a troubled horizon. I couldn’t fault them for that, but it was a hard pill to swallow at my age; that eventually all thoughts of dragons, and the precious jewels they were said to hoard, got hammered away, year by year, until there was nothing left but black old coal dust.
