The Dream
Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. The canopy of the woods cast dancing shadows across the floor of mulched leaves and spider moss and ferns, though flecks of sky snuck through the leaves like rose petals. Past the thick husks of evergreen and oak and the crumbling skin of fallen trees, the leaves thinned into a blanket of moss. And beyond that, stars flickered to life among feather grass, fading and drifting onward. Vibrant, like those peering from behind patches of purple above. Tufts of dandelion seeds and spiria petals sprinkled the breeze like snowflakes before settling to the bed of juniper moss that led from the high-grassed meadow and into the woods. And all the while, the fresh fragrance of wildflowers and honeysuckle would settle across the meadow.

The Five Fey
Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. The sweet scent of apple blossoms caressed the cheek and slid silently up reddened noses. The grass was cool and dew was collecting on the hem of their dresses as they steadily strode up the small hill. The field below was surface still, but undulating slightly; like a dark sea. They reached the stone circle just as the amethyst moon broke through the clouds. They quietly set about spreading blankets and lighting candles. The moon shone so brightly the candles were not necessary, but symbolic and customary. The fey placed the candles in a circle by their feet then slowly laid down on the woolen blankets with their feet at the center; fanning out their hair above their heads. The candlelight danced and swayed with the most subtle of breezes. And so, they waited, the five fey.

Child of the storm
Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. Hidden beneath the trees, we huddled close to keep the cold at bay and prayed that sleep would soon find us. It felt like days we’d been awake, slowly travelling through the dense forest covering our tracks as we carefully moved through. The storm was on the move… it seemed angry, like it was moving through the village with a vendetta. What or who was it searching for? Since the towers fell, no one is safe. No towers meant no guards. Our village, once a peaceful hideaway for those hoping to escape the busy lifestyle offered by the surrounding cities, now a deserted wasteland. Nothing could protect us when the storms came, it tore across the land leaving nothing but destruction in its wake. We hid and watched as families were whisked up into the swirling vortex, houses tumbling down as if they were made of cards. We were lucky to get away. It’s just the two of us now, we have nowhere to go, and no money. If only we could get some sleep…

The Unbroken Key
Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. Mara loved to watch them bend and blow into strange shapes, she sat on a chaise in the corner of the small unit she shared with her father. The archives didn’t usually provide a residence for families but they’d made an exception. Mara still wasn’t sure why. She played with her hair, humming quietly to herself, her legs curled gracelessly beneath her as she stared out the window when suddenly, something caught her eye. A small shape passing through the clouds, she leaned forward squinting. It almost looked like a missive. But who would be sending one at this time of night? The archives had enacted a strict curfew after numerous noise complaints. She tracked the folded piece of paper as it flew across the pink sky, directly towards the administration office. Before she could muse any further on the origin or purpose of the missive she was distracted by a noise behind her. She turned rapidly, almost falling from her chair and saw her father standing in the doorway with an amused smile.

Tom and the Magical Journey
Every night at midnight, the clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. It was a beautiful sight. Sonya loved to come outside when everyone else was asleep and just look up at the marvelous scene before her. Tonight was no different. She laid a blanket on the ground and lay on top of it. All was silent, nothing but her thoughts kept her company.

The Sky Behind the Sky
Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. They arrived from the East, billowing or scattered in threads, each changing shape with seemingly rhythmic intent. Sometimes they sped through their movements, other times they savored each slow twirl but more often it was a mixture of both, weaving a story like a symphony would. The students of the University’s Musical Arts program composed songs inspired by the midnight clouds for this very reason. Few were ever very good.
