Painted into Place
A Micro adaptation of my award-winning short story of the same name.
It looked painted into place. A red dresser jutting out from the white wall. His hands caressed the curved wood and came away red and sticky. She had just painted it.
He reached up and drew a handprint on the wall. Red on white. Like a child's drawing. He smeared it with his finger, just like her lips. Red and sticky. Red stains on white walls. His eyes flicked to the mirror. Behind him, her hands like his own. Red and sticky. Her lipstick like the wall. Smeared red on white. Her sensuous curves like the dresser. Painted into place.

~~~ Meg slipped the cigarette between her lips and smiled wryly as the students walked past her and into the building, each one offering her a different passive aggressive gesture, some more obvious than others–wrinkled noses, hands waving wildly at the fleeting smoke, and of course, there were the fake coughers.

The Ugliest Building
Mark Twain called the building I work in, “The ugliest building in America.” I agree. The Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building isn’t the largest in Washington, D.C., but its imposing façade makes it feel like it is. I work for the Office of E-Government and Information Technology. I have a satellite office in the bowels of this monstrosity. Working in this building gives us quick access to both the President and Vice-President because they also have offices here. This access may be why I’m in this situation, or maybe it’s the project I’m assigned to, or both.

I was going to relax this evening. Tune out, hunker down, look after myself. I need it. I am exhausted. Thoroughly used up. And it's only Wednesday. Not even half way through the week. A week that in the UK, is Mental Health Awareness week. I don't know who decides these things, who gets to co-opt a day, a week, a month, and declare it a thing about a thing. But I do know a lot about mental health. I know a lot about mental health AND I know a lot about working for the UK's National Health Service. And so it was with interest that I clicked play on the below video, earlier today. By the time I finished, I was in tears.

I have to wonder, is she horrified or endeared by your actions? My parents would have been horrified & I might not have been able to sit for a week. (Actually, she'd probably have had me writing sentences, "I will not smear paint on the walls," until sometime next Tuesday.) My wife might have found it endearing, after getting over being upset with what I had done both to the dresser & the wall. She would have reminded me that I would be repainting both!
