Mile-High delivery

The unexpected

By Delight Published about a year ago 3 min read

Rose had been a midwife for over a decade, and in that time, she had delivered hundreds of babies. She was confident in her abilities and knew that she could handle anything that came her way. But when she boarded the flight to London, little did she know that she would be facing one of the most challenging deliveries of her life.

As soon as Rose took her seat, she noticed that the weather outside was not looking good. The sky was dark, and the clouds were thick, indicating that a storm was coming. Despite the weather, the flight took off on time, and everything seemed to be going smoothly. However, just a few hours into the flight, Rose heard a commotion coming from the back of the plane.

She turned around to see a woman, who looked to be in her late thirties, doubled over in pain. The woman's husband was with her, looking worried and unsure of what to do. Rose rushed to their aid, and upon examining the woman, she realized that she was in labor.

The woman's water had already broken, and the baby was coming fast. Rose quickly assessed the situation and realized that they needed to deliver the baby on the plane. She gathered the necessary supplies from the emergency medical kit and asked the flight attendants to clear an area in the back of the plane.

As the plane shook and bounced through the turbulence, Rose and the woman's husband worked together to deliver the baby. Rose coached the woman through each contraction and instructed her husband on how to support her. After what seemed like an eternity, the baby finally emerged, and Rose breathed a sigh of relief.

But their relief was short-lived. As Rose cleaned and swaddled the newborn, she noticed that something wasn't right. The baby was blue, and its breathing was shallow. Rose quickly assessed the situation and realized that the baby was in distress.

Without hesitation, Rose sprang into action. She instructed the flight attendants to bring her the oxygen tank and began performing chest compressions on the baby. The plane's intercom system crackled to life as the captain announced that they would be making an emergency landing in the nearest airport.

Rose worked tirelessly to stabilize the baby, and after what seemed like an eternity, the baby's breathing became regular, and its color returned to normal. Rose breathed a sigh of relief as the plane touched down on the runway.

The emergency responders rushed onto the plane, and Rose handed the baby over to them. They rushed the baby to the nearest hospital, and Rose turned to the woman and her husband, who were both in shock and emotional.

As the plane taxied to the gate, Rose couldn't help but think about how lucky they had all been. She knew that if the baby had been born just a few minutes earlier or a few minutes later, they may not have been able to save it. She was grateful for the experience and knew that she had done everything she could to ensure the safety of the mother and baby.

As the passengers disembarked the plane, Rose made her way to the gate, still feeling the adrenaline rush from the experience. She had faced a challenge that she had never encountered before, but she had risen to the occasion and saved a life.

Rose knew that she would never forget this flight and the moment she had to deliver a baby in the midst of a storm. She was proud of herself for being able to remain calm and focused despite the chaos around her. And although she knew that there would be many more challenges to come in her career as a midwife, she was confident that she could handle them all.
