Immortal's Tale - Chapter 11

Heroes X

By Mohammed DarasiPublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 4 min read

"Heroes X?"

Max followed his pursuer, naturally, to find out what they know. It turns out his follower was a young-looking woman dressed in a ridiculous fashion. A massive unbuttoned jacket over a t-shirt and shorts.

After many twists and turns, she finally enters a rundown building with the words "Heroes X" graffitied at the very top centre.

"Hiya Rebecca! How was your day?" Someone asked with a sweet voice.

"Do you even know what you've done, Janine?" Asked Rebecca in a hostile tone.

"In my defence, you never meet anyone, and Gerrard is perfect for you" replied Janine quickly and defensively.

"What're you talking about?" Asked a puzzled Rebecca.

"Huh?"

"Never mind that for now" said Rebecca with a hand gesture as if pushing some invisible this in the air aside. "Just now, I was following that new villain. You know, the one in the news, ‘Black Wing’? that one. I was following him for so long without him even noticing until you called my phone and scared him off!" Finished a frustrated Rebecca.

Janine stayed silent for a moment and showed a serious expression then said. " Rebecca, I know that the company has been down in its luck lately but telling these stories to create traction isn't the right way to help. Hero associations like us depend on our reputation to get contracts so we can't be known as liars in the hero circles."

"Ah!" gasped Rebecca. "I am many things, but a liar I'm not!" rebuked Rebecca.

Without missing a beat, Janine replied "remember Jerry? What excuse did you use to get out of the date again?" She didn't wait for a reply and continued "your apartment was on fire, and you had to go check in your kids' safety. What do you call it if you don't have kids, and, in your in apartment's 120-year history there was no mention of even a singe in the carpet, let alone a fire. Hm?"

Rebecca touched the back of her neck in embarrassment.

"What about Vincent?" Janine continued on. "you told him the pentagon called you for your help in a secret thing. Completely forgetting that he is a CIA's 'enabled liaison' that had the power and access to unravel your web of lies in seconds"

Rebecca lowered her head further in shame, but Janine didn't care.

"And then there's Gavin, you told him-"

"Okay, okay. I get it" Rebecca interrupted, unable to hear anymore of her failures as a human being. "I might've lied to those guys to get out of the dates, but that just means I'm bad at dating. I know what I saw today. I'm 100% sure it's him." Rebecca banged on the desk with her fist for dramatic effect.

"You were also '100% sure' that the janitor was a villain in disguise and was trying to steal our data" Janine said with a chuckle. "What data!" Janine continued, unable to hold her self-deprecating laughter anymore.

"Would you let up, woman!" Shouted Rebecca, defeated and embarrassed.

All the while, Janine was wiping the tears of laughter and running mascara from her face. "Sorry Rebecca, you're just too funny."

Rebecca harrumphed and turned away with her armed locked.

"Come on Rebecca! You know I can't do anything unless you bring me some evidence" Janine said, after letting out the last of her laughs.

Rebecca turned her head towards Janine "I'll bring you your evidence, and then you can shove it right where the sun don't shine!"

"Rude much!" Said Janine sarcastically.

"Whatever-" Rebecca lazily waved her hand and said dismissingly, "-I'm going home" and then left for the changing rooms. Rebecca always kept some clothes to change into wherever she could, in case of emergency.

She quickly changes into more cosy clothes under the jacket she got from the homeless guy, and left for home.

Maximilian couldn't hear the conversation between the girl and her colleague from outside, but judging with how the colleague reacted, it seems she doesn't believe the girl's words. This is fortunate.

Nevertheless, nothing short of his utmost due diligence would suffice for easing his mind about the matter.

"Heroes X. I will allow no one to foil my plans, so some research on you seems in order." With that conclusion, Maximilian disappeared into the night and headed to one of his hideouts.
